Personally, I don't like that and don't think they made the right call, but that was one explanation.
To me, the writers/bookers/agents or Vince himself just fucked up. It was clear what they could've done considering the "knee injury" angle they used at the end of the Women's Rumble:
- Becky injures her knee against Asuka. Asuka doesn't necessarily cause the injury, but Becky tweaks the knee on a bad landing or some other way. The referee decides she can no longer continue despite her protests and Asuka is declared the winner by ref's decision or countout. The crowd shits on it.
- Later, in a backstage segment, we see Becky complain to Finlay. She begs to get into the Rumble, but there's no spot for her. Rousey walks by and smirks. This establishes three things - (1) Becky is pissed, (2) Finlay is sympathetic and is an authority for whatever reason, and (3) Rousey and Lynch are still beefing and their animosity is more personal than Becky/Asuka.
- Rumble happens exactly how it did. Now, when Becky asks Finlay if she can enter in place of the injured entrant, we know that Finlay is an authority and can make that call and that he's sympathetic to her plight and respects her fighting spirit. Also, when Becky does enter the Rumble, you can still build the ending around her supposed injured knee.

Last night was the absolute worst way to get Charlotte added to the WM match, and the crowd acted in the best way possible. With a huge show of contempt. It was not heat, it was a resentment feeling.
The WWE needs to stop this shit. This is exactly why people might jump ship to AEW.

What in the hell is Vince doing? They had HHH and Stephanie and even Vince state that Becky vs Ronda could be the biggest WM match of all time (doubt it) and then they go and change it to add Charlotte.
This is what makes fans angry and want to turn off the product.

I think it's also very likely they're doing this to make sure Ronda isn't getting booed, as this gets all the heat onto Charlotte.
There are many, many issues here. For one, if it were me, Ronda vs. Becky is the way to go. That's the match that has had the hype since November, it's the match everyone I know still watching WWE was excited for after that post Rumble segment. The only argument for a triple threat in my view is that the match might be better and that's not a good enough reason, especially since Charlotte-Becky-Ronda is, at most, a 4 1/2 star match compared to the 4, 4 1/4 star match that Becky and Ronda would've had (and that's just the floor). That's still a memorable match with a much more more memorable angle in my estimation. So that's problem number one.
Problem number two is WWE then completely overthinking everything once they decided this would be a triple threat. All they needed to do after last week was keep Becky suspended, put Charlotte in the match and then have Becky force her way back in. It's not as good as the one on one angle but it's workable. Instead they come up with this convoluted, McMahon focused plot where Becky has to confront all of them throughout last week, then spend a whole show deciding if she should apologize to them, only for that apology (and thus the whole show) to immediately be invalidated by Vince because "SHE'S GOT A BAD ATTITUDE!" It's all so pointless and unnecessary and would be shocking if WWE hadn't done this 9,001 times over the past 18 years. And that's before we get into the whole thing WWE themselves pointed out a month ago, on screen, that the show sucked, things were changing and the fans were now the Authority. I must've missed when the McMahon's getting involved in unnecessary anti-authority angles wasn't the rage since 1998 because it appears that's all WWE is doing.
I feel like a lot of the people saying today "you're getting worked" or "just give it time" are kind of missing that whole point. Yes things can turn around, yes maybe WWE finds a way to pull the rabbit out of the hat. But it doesn't change the fact that WWE had this organic, white hot angle between the budding superstar and a legit crossover star that had already done everything it needed to to get fans excited. If WWE just lets these two cut promos, have their Twitter beef and leave well enough alone for the next two months they have a money match on their hands. And what happens instead? The whole thing becomes another McMahon fueled drama where they shoehorn another wrestler in because...because. Now that white hot singles match becomes a three way that a) destroys any chance for a compelling Smackdown title match (have you seen the Smackdown Women's roster other than Asuka, Becky and Charlotte? It's the dead zone) b) will be less over than the singles match and c) gives you no satisfying conclusion. Like think of all the scenarios for the finish of that match now. If Becky beats Charlotte in order to protect Ronda it's a waste; Becky has beaten Charlotte twice in the past year, beating her again is just meaningless. Becky beating Ronda would just raise the question of why Charlotte needed to be included. Ronda beating either of them would make little sense given Ronda appears to be going on hiatus, and the whole point of this match is for her to put someone over. And Charlotte winning is just going to piss people off in a bad way.
It's all just so stupid. They had a sure thing and they traded it in for a clusterfuck. Unless Becky vs. Charlotte is happening at Fastlane to determine Ronda's opponent and Becky wins (itself another pointless thing because it would again be Becky beating someone she's already proven to be dominate over) it feels like WWE really screwed the pooch on this one.

For some reason, WWE is just obsessed with the idea of Charlotte and Ronda involved together.
You're 100% correct on this. Everyone is behind Becky. Everyone. Just fucking ride that wave. She could be your biggest star, period. Not biggest female star, just biggest star.
Becky has everyone's full support. She doesn't have people (and I was one) arguing that she's not big enough or doesn't have the mainstream audience's support like with Daniel Bryan. She doesn't have people saying that she has the wrong look like some older school people did with CM Punk.
She's a beautiful girl who can talk trash and go in the ring, she has everything it takes to be a crossover star and appeal to absolutely everyone. Becky Lunch could be your next John Cena or Steve Austin, all of the stars are aligning perfectly for that to happen, and it really looks like they might somehow miss the boat on it.https://youtu.be/wue-ZFnEta8

Wow Coach. I was expecting us to debate this until the Leafs won the Stanley Cup (this summer, still a long time for a wrestling debate) and instead we agree! This is why I love you Coach; always keeping me on my toes!
I just wish this sort of thing actually still surprised me but this is just par the course for WWE these days. Like you said, this should be the layup of all layups and WWE is instead now in position to throw it all away. It be unbelievable if WWE didn't just get out of a four year period where they could only get Roman Reigns over once he got leukemia, among other issues. At this point I think you could give Vince McMahon the script, cast and crew of The Godfather, and he'd somehow turn it into The Godfather Part III.

No man, it's so frustrating to watch them have lightning in a bottle and just either not know it, or want to cater to that attitude of keeping every star in a top top match at Mania.
They need to look back at their history. The most over stars in the top angle needs to be the match that's booked. This is Becky's year, Charlotte had hers last year when she ended Asuka's streak! Would WrestleMania 18 have been better if they'd decided that Austin couldn't afford a step back for a year after being in the main event the prior year and had made it a triple threat with Rock and Hogan? Would WrestleMania 21 have been better if they'd decided to hold strong to the Orton push and added him to Batista vs Triple H?
It's really, really frustrating that they have this opportunity to put a star that has everything that they want in a top star and the fans behind them, something that hasn't happened in 15 years since Cena, but they're going to piss it away because any time the women make history Charlotte has to be involved, so of course she's going to be there the first time the women main event Mania.
I like Charlotte a lot. I think that she's a supreme talent. But this isn't her year, nor her moment in history.Last edited by Team Farrell; 02-12-2019, 01:32 PM.https://youtu.be/wue-ZFnEta8

There's a few options and scenarios of why they've done this the way they have. Scenario one is they want Charlotte in the match to take the fall, Option two, they're making Becky earn it again at Fastlane, taking Charlotte out of the match but then they'd have to Charlotte the consolation prize of Asuka when really Charlotte should have went after Asuka anyway..
Option 3 is The Daniel Bryan booking where Becky continues to get screwed over and then she beats the authority in the opener of mania to get added to the match. Oh so original.
Having two PPVs before Mania means that WWE in their mind has to manufacture this type of drama... but getting to the end point doesn't make it a good story.
Also cult brings up the point that WWE makes these false promises where the McMahon family was going to give people fresh matches, things fans want to see.. and it took all about a month to wash that away lol.
