  • Can totally see that. Fernandez feels like a Steamboat type, he's very explosive in a time when a lot of guys prefer to be methodical. I know Arn will be coming around the region soon, can't wait for him to show up.

    • Also apparently one of wrestling's great bullshitters. Which is ironic because his autobiography is called 'No BS with the Bull'. I guess he was getting in first with that title, huh.

      • Ha! I wouldn't have guessed but I'm not shocked. Quite a few big time ribbers back in the day.

            • What do folks think of Paul Jones as a manager? I was interested to see his work but so far he just seems like a poor man's JJ Dillion, with JJ on the same show doing the exact same shtick but way better.

              • Yep, Prime Time . Lol. And there’s a joke to be had for where I accidentally put it and the concerns of the participants on that show, but I’m not going make it.

Miz fan, I don’t really like him much as a wrestler or manager. He’s definitely managing the d-squad for the most part. But considering who he’s around, JJ Dillon and Jim Cornette, he’s definitely lacking.

                • I never particularly wanted to see more of Paul Jones than I did but for what it was supposed to be, it was fine. Low stakes, lower card, never really supposed to get above that, just "hold down an end", to use a phrase from cricket.

                  • Yeah. Paul Jones army and Boogy Woogy man had their place on the card and even though they were the dopes, they were still rugged, bloody bastard dopes… Sort of contributed to the unity of effect in that era.

                    • And sometimes you don't want the lower card guys being managed by the same people who are looking after the megastars, but they still need someone to handle the talking or give them some of the other options that come with a manager.

                      • For about a month of episodes, I think, Dusty Rhodes has been bringing out a guy in a goofy gorilla suit, mainly to make fun of Nikita Koloff. He also brought out the gorilla's mother, a different monkey suit with a bonnet on top. All this to just one week say oh, it was Dick Slater in the suit all along. No dramatic reveal or angle to speak of. Some exceptionally silly booking. XD

But I did see Ric Flair carry Sam Houston to a pretty great match, not sure I would have guessed that was possible!

                        • I like Sam Houston’s place on the card. That lower card baby face that has a friendship with the upper card baby faces. It gives drama to their enhancement matches with the heels and also gives fuel to guys like Dusty when they get cheated…

One person I’ve been watching in earlier Mid Atlantic years is Jack Brisco. Might be the best technician I’ve seen.

                          • Have you seen the Briscos vs. Adonis and Murdoch from '84? Not Crockett but one of my favorite matches from the 80s.

And agreed, Sam Houston definitely has his uses. Tully Blanchard gave him a bunch of stiches and Dusty was HOT about it!

                            • Was watching some Mid Atlantic from 82 and Sgt Slaughter and Don Kernodle popped on TV with the NWA world tag titles, claiming they pinned Antonio Inoki and Giant Baba in a tournament final in Japan with Kernodle getting the pin. I find this hard to believe but couldn’t find anything that proved or disproved it online. Sounds like slander, lol.

                              • Your instincts are good, that's no more real than the fabled IC title tournament in Brazil. I think this is when they take the titles back from Ole and Hansen when the former ran off with the belts to Georgia?

Even if it weren't something like that, I think Baba was teaming with Jumbo by '82, so it would have been him rather than Inoki if it was at all real.
