  • AEW being the fresh new alternative was so golden that anyone who pointed out the flaws in the structure were ridiculed. I'm taking a personal stance here because it felt like most of the places I discussed wrestling on the internet, people became so divisive so fast, and now we're seeing the same thing behind the curtain in AEW like this was NWO wolfPunk vs NWO Elite. For the record, LOP was not one of these places. If anything, I think the people who enjoyed AEW left these threads because the criticisms weren't being pushed aside as a small minority.

In any case, Tony needs to be a boss. Vince's micromanaging turned off so many fans that they forgot why some sort of control was needed in the first place. Creatively and backstage, there needs to be someone in charge.Tony seems to have great creative ideas, but also seems to need a filter. He's no Vince Russo, but there still seems to be a need for someone assist.

In terms of being a boss, I haven't seen any evidence that he has that in him. It's hard to say since fans don't ever know the real picture, but from what we can tell, he's been too friendly with too many people and letting too many voices have a power play. It's WCW circa 1998-99.

It almost feels like Jericho should be involved more. I'm not sure his music career would allow him to spend more time in a backstage role, but he seems level headed and civil enough with everyone that he'd be a good fit. Of course, it doesn't need to be a former wrestler. Nick Khan was apparently a hatchet man for Vince, so I'm sure Tony could hire someone to fill that role.

TK is in a corner, and if he shows too much backbone now, the positives he brings to the table as a boss could turn around and no longer work. So I think someone to do the dirty work is needed. Tony shouldn't bow out by any means: I'm no AEW fan, but there's no denying he's got a lot of creativity and passion for wrestling. But he can't manage everything, and with creative being his strong suit apparently, then he needs a suit and tie to deliver fines, suspensions and firings.

As for the wrestlers and EVPs, I really don't know if there will ever be a straight answer as to who started the fight or who escalated too much too fast. I agree with Oliver in saying I understand why everyone is angry, but it doesn't excuse how they've unprofessionally dealt with their frustrations.

    • Bring in Jim Cornette to be the boss.

      • To be honest, I think they could probably use someone like a Cornette. Not Cornette himself, not even someone brash, but just someone actually experienced in the running of a company and how to do backstage stuff. I don't think they really have anybody who has that, and if they do they possibly aren't in the roles to actually act behind the scenes. Kevin Sullivan could be that person, but with guys like Regal, Anderson, Malenko kicking around I think they could do with a few of those guys being more high profile back behind the scenes,

        • So, it seems - reading through a news article - that yhe expectation is that the EVPs will be suspended along with a couple of othere, and that Punk and Steel could well be done by the end of the day (part of me would assume this comes after a rather tense Dynamite this evening...). Is Khan right to make those decisions?

And does Punk get a phone call from the 'doofus son in law' in the not to distant future?

          • The problem I see is that it's hard to know how much of this is a show on behalf of TK. If the suspension is for a month (let's say), are the EVPs still getting paid to sit at home and still holding the trios titles? Will they still be doing their EVP roles, or just not performing on TV? The fact that they are also in non-performing roles makes this cloudy.

Punk is already seemingly dubious, so whatever punishment he might get could end up amounting to him feeling his punishment is real, while the EVPs are protected with a vacation.

I dunno what the answer is, but it's so much more complicated that Omega and the Bucks have the EVP title. If Punk and Steel are fired, while the others suspended, it can still seem like favoritism. If all of them are equally suspended, it can seem like favoritism towards Punk being their supposed top draw.

            • You think it’s funny this happened after CM Punk injured himself? If this is a work, it’d be a good way of getting the belt off of Punk and then maybe they can transfer the heat to MJF in his absence. But maybe I’m giving them too much credit, The creativity is really lacking in this promotion.

I heard someone mention Kevin Sullivan. Tony really needs a booker and I think that’d be a pretty good choice. If you think about it, CM Punk, supposedly their biggest baby face, has wrestled more baby faces than heels. They definitely need a booker.

I'm disagree about the creativity lacking. They are extremely creative in ways that WWE fans wouldn't recognize. I have insane respect for the creativity of AEW. I wish I enjoyed the Wrestling content as much as I enjoy their creativity, because I might watch.

And it's the wrestling content that holds them back from getting a veteran booker. Do you think Kevin Sullivan, or Jim Cornette, or anyone with that credibility would have the desire to book the non psychology spot fests? If they get a booker, it'll have to be from within. Chris Daniels for example. I have no idea if he is qualified or would want it, but it would be that type of person who can appreciate the various styles of wrestling that's out there.

                • Daniels is, reportedly, being suspended as part of his role in the backstage kerfuffle, so I don't know if that would create an issue with him - but he's the kind of guy that it would make sense to have in that kind of role. Who does book AEW? I tried to Google the answer and all I got was Booker T sounding off about AEW.

Whatever it was - work, shoot, or some kind of other thing - it worked. I'm watching this week's Dynamite.

Tony Khan is AEW's booker. It seems like he takes input from everyone and provides a lot of creative freedom, but the buck stops with him.

I did tune in for the first time in a long time, and after the opening segment, I turned it off.

                        • Was that just dislike of the opening segment? I thought it was pretty smart, to be honest. I can't see an endpoint to anything AEW do right now that isn't MJF at least being champion within the next 12 months, if not immediately out of this tournament.

See, I was sure it was Khan, but feel like there must be some other people involved in creative and I just can't find out who. Hopefully it's the Arn's of this world.

                          • No, I tuned in to see how AEW was going to handle the situation. And after Moxely's great promo I did not feel the need to watch anything else.
