Black Widow has been delayed two more more months, thus pushing it from a May release to July. However, it will now be available to stream immediately on Disney+ Premier Access, so at least there’s a decent compromise.

Yeah, for a $30 additional fee. We already pay for the Disney+ service, then they want more for a movie? No thanks, I's rather go to a theater, or wait until it's free. That is 100% terrible business.

HBOMax is not charging additional prices for their new releases, so what gives Disney the audacity to do so?

It’s actually a genius model, and I don’t know why they haven’t done it yet, to be honest. This movie probably wasn’t going to be a billion dollar earner like IW or Endgame, so them pushing it back repeatedly hoping for theaters to reopen and people to not be scared to leave their homes has actually cost them in the short term, and possibly even in the long term. I believe, and I could be wrong, that if they had kept pushing it back further and further in the hopes of people flocking to see it whenever they could finally get out and about, people would’ve just lost interest and be like “Eh... I’ll just wait for the next one.” Disney+ should’ve released it via streaming the week it was supposed to come out, and then they could’ve already deposited that money in the bank.

Also, $30 is way cheaper than what I would’ve spent in the theater once you factor in multiple tickets for family/friends and concessions and/or adult beverages. Plus... I don’t have to be around strangers annoying me while I’m trying to enjoy a movie.

Disney did the same thing with Mulan in December, charging $30, and it was a huge success for them.

I strongly debated paying for Raya and the Last Dragon. From what I understand you have access to these movies as long as your subscription is active.

To watch RATLD you have to pay the additional 29.99, along with your subscription or wait to June 4th, when it is free to all D+ subscribers.

And Black Widow will be the same.

Powder, do you really think people want to wait two months longer (at a minimum... I’d be willing to bet a handsome sum it’ll be longer) to watch the first MCU movie in over two years? Yes, we got WandaVision, and we’re now getting Falcon and Bucky (so much easier to type than the official title...), but that’s just not the same. People are gonna plop down the $30 and stream it. If for no other reason than what I mentioned earlier... it’s just less expensive this way. I’m already planning a party involving myself, my girlfriend and four other people... the $30 for streaming it is already cheaper than six tickets to the theatre. And again... no annoying people and *much cheaper food and drinks.

I am not sure, to be honest. Yes going to the movies is more expensive as a whole if you go with a date and pay for everything, but it could be cheaper if you just buy your own ticket....BUT, people feel justified in spending money to go to the movies over spending $30 to watch on their computer or TV.

It akin to going out to a bar. You spend on average $5-8 per beer with a tip included, and depending on age, you could buy/drink anywhere from 3-??? most likely 6-8 beers per night. Could be more. So that means that you would spend anywhere from $20-60+ for a night out drinking, then maybe some food, cab/uber, and maybe buying a friend a beer, so you could easily spend well over $100 to go out on a given night. Versus going to a store and buying even the expensive craft 12 pack for $20-25, and spending less and drinking less but staying home. It's not the same experience, you get the same beer, but you would probably end up buying the cheaper beer to not "waste the money".


You feel justified in paying for the experience. I know I do. I would gladly and easily spend $30 easy to go to a movie theater, but spending $30 to watch at home feels like a rip off, just like going to a bar and buying a few $10 beers, where I wouldn't buy the $25 twelve pack to stay at home.

I knw the money is the same, but it feels different, and I think that other people will feel the same.

I do actually fall into this bracket. Here in the UK a cinema ticket is about £6 (maybe $8 in US?) so it's a big jump, as I tend to take my own pre-bought snacks into the theater instead of spending another £6 on just a large drink.

However, for the superfans, I can see how it can be a good investment. If I'm not mistaken, I believe you can watch the film over and over without paying extra? That's something you can't do in the cinema. You'll likely be going with friends, who need their own tickets, so that's extra costs. Also, there's other potential costs to going to a cinema, like gas, parking fees... So when you look at it like that, $30 isn't that rough of a deal for most people.

How much were WWE PPVs back before the network? I think we sometimes forget things like that.

I mean at the end of it all, no one is forcing you to pay to watch it.

I live on Long Island, NY where we have one of the most expensive cost of living in the US, so movie ticket prices range from $6-8 for the matinee (first showing of the day) to $23 for an IMAX3D ticket. But conservatively, a standard adult ticket is around $14-17 each. If you buy your ticket online or through and app, you would then have to add taxes and fees, which adds a few dollars.

All in all, it is cheaper to pay the $30, but as I said above, it not the money, it's the experience. $30 to watch at home feels like a rip off vs $30 to go to the movies.

And I guess that’s where we differ. Using your example of the bar, I’d much rather do that versus drinking at home because it’s more of the social interaction with people that I’m looking for. Whereas with a movie, I’m trying to focus on that and pay attention, therefore, I don’t want to be around a bunch of strangers at that point.

I completely get that, buy my point was that going out justifies the spending of money over staying in.

I think we’re arguing the same point but from a different perspective. I love movies, but I hate going to the theatre. (Unless it’s a movie that’s about to leave the theatres and I can catch a matinee on a Tuesday when I’m pretty much the only person in there. A jam packed theatre? No thanks.)
