During the Civil War story, Tony gets Peter to unmask in front of the world as a demonstration of support for the Superhero Registration Act, and Peter does it despite having his reservations because of the relationship they had built. So at least there is a basis for the MCU relationship between the two, and they weren’t just throwing around shit for the fun of it.
Yes, I did read Civil War, and I knew that Spidey would start off on Tony's side. Of course in the comic, Spidey switches sides, but it was his relationship with Tony that was the reason he trusted him. The movie of course couldn't go fully into the story, but it was good way to introduce Spidey to the MCU.

I personally liked the mentor/mentee relationship. Spidey was introduced to the MCU later, and in the context of the MCU, it all makes sense. It's refreshing to see a different take on Spidey that's different from the other movies. I think that if you can have a different take from other movies, well also keeping some foot in the source material, it's a win for everyone.

    • I'm getting to know the comics pretty well because I have Marvel Unlimited, and besides Civil War, Spider-Man and Iron man aren't really connected in the comics before that, because for most of Spider-man's history he's loner, trying to keep his identity hidden and in fact, they basically un did what happened in Civil War in the comics with One more Day.

Its not really about holding it to the comic history, I'm fine with different interpretations and the relationship does work on some level, I do actually enjoy the MCU Spidey movies but its not because Tony is a big part of it, or the tech that Spidey uses.. That type of stuff bothers me more than Tony being involved.

I just believe they used Tony as a crutch and I wish Spidey was defined by more than that.

      • Marvel's Live Action Ghost Rider Series not moving forward at Hulu.

EXCLUSIVE: Hulu has opted not to proceed with Marvel’s Ghost Rider, its planned live-action series starring Gabriel Luna, I have learned. Hulu in May picked up two new live-action series from…

Shame too caused I liked Luna's version of Ghost Rider in AOS and was looking forward to the series.

        • Eh... no big loss. Go with a Johnny Blaze version of the show and plop it on Disney+ with She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and all the other shows coming out in the next few years.

          • Apparently 2021 is going to be the first year that the MCU sees four films released in a single year, right alongside all the Disney Plus stuff.

I'm not as huge a Marvel fan as some of the folks frequenting here so I ask this as a genuine question: for the most die hard fan, will there ever be such a thing as too much? When does the saturation point come, if there is one?

            • I'm not super into the MCU but I think it would take the public rejecting super hero movies in general that and doing films that aren't crowd pleasing. 4 in one year seems alot but its only 2 and half hours out of a day in the end result. If the movies are good, people will watch.

              • Personally, for me it's when the quality of the films/shows starts to dip, which in my opinion has not yet happened. That's not to say that each subsequent film has been better than the previous one, but they have all met and very often exceeded expectations.

                • I also wonder stretching the limits of who people are gonna pay money to see a movie about. The Eternals and Shang-Chi are very niche in the Marvel Universe as far as popularity BUT have the benefit in Eternals of having an intriguing cast and Shang-Chi a kung fu movie which is entirely different than what the MCU has offered.

                  • They made a movie with a raccoon and a tree. I’m pretty sure they could put out a Great Lakes Avengers movie and nobody would blink an eye, and Disney would still make a bazillion dollars off of it. Again, it’s all about quality.

To date I'd rank the 2 Guardians films among the best of all comic movies.

Guardians 3 is one of my most anticipated movies upcoming, followed closely by the new Dr Strange flick. Those movies will be the new phases standard imo.

                      • Doctor Strange is one of the ones I was pleasantly surprised with. I knew little about him from the comics, and I wasn’t terribly familiar with Cumberbatch in general, so I went in watching nearly completely blind, and I was thoroughly entertained. I’m looking forward to the sequel, epescially with it being billed as Marvel’s foray into the horror genre.

This. Before watching them, I had absolutely no knowledge of them at all in the slightest. They turned out to be the 2 of the films in my top 5 Marvel films.

As for the Eternals and Shang-Chi and other niche films coming out, I have full confidence they'll be great based on what they did for other films I had no idea going in, such as Guardians or Antman.

If there is one slight niggle in the back of my mind, it's that they have lost their two biggest characters in Ironman and Captain America and it'll be interesting how they move on from them. Then again... they could easily come back somehow, it is Marvel after all!

                          • Ironman and Cap imo were largely popular due to who played them. So if you nail the casting with other major properties joining (X-Men and FF) you could have similar success.

                            • It's not necessarily that they were popular, it was more to do with the fact that by and large they had a presence about them, even when not directly involved in the story. Especially with Ironman.

                              • Not saying you're wrong but it wasn't going to last forever and I do think RDJ elevated the character who was largely an afterthought in Marvel before the MCU started. Moving on from Ironman is difficult but it shouldn't be and isn't impossible.
