  • Yeah my bad, I'd scanned over an article about the Copa America causing a backlog of World Cup qualifiers for South American teams and presumed there was one next summer which was causing it when yes it was the one they just played this summer that has caused it. It's that backlog that means they're playing qualifiers on the Thursday so even if they're given exemptions from quarantining upon their return they're likely to miss the first league game back as they won't be back in England until Friday afternoon at the earliest.

    • One Friday CM Punk returns to wrestling, the following one Ronaldo returns to Man United. What on earth will next Friday bring?

      • That feeling when you let Buendia go to Argentina for the Qualifier knowing he'll have to quarantine and miss games, and they don't even put him on the fucking bench....

        • Maybe they'll release him early. Although that'll still mean he misses next weekend's game.

It all comes back to them having a totally unnecessary Copa America in the summer which cost them 3-4 qualifying matches they could've played instead.

          • Just irritating when you try and accommodate people and then get bitten for it.

On an unrelated note, Jack Grealish gave an interview as part of the England camp that has gone down terribly with the Villa fans. Club legend status is well and truly gone now, I'd wager. You'll find some people who don't really care but they are in the minority.

            • Don't think I've seen that, what's he said that's upset people?

              • To be honest, it seems to be more the way that he said it than anything he particularly said. He basically told the truth about the release clause and how/why it was put in but managed to do it in such a way that everyone now has the impression he couldn't wait to get away and that staying at the club he claimed to support would have been a massive inconvenience to his career. Naturally, whatever the truth of that, it does not remotely go down well with people who would love to play one game for that club and would probably pay for the privilege.

So yeah, there's a few defenders still knocking around but they've always been outnumbered and this hasn't helped. He ain't getting that stand named after him anymore, put it that way!

                • So there's no chance of him returning "home" in 11 years then

                  • Rule nothing out in this game, but just like there have been Villa fans not entirely happy about Ashley Young coming back, I think some people will never be won over to Grealish again. I'm not sure coming back as half the force he was when his career is winding down is going to change that.

The Villa have - have always had - ambitions to get back where they think they belong, in amongst the top clubs in the country. Jack bailed on that - to the more impatient of our fans that's going to be the thing that they find unforgivable.

                    • You have bigger things to worry about with Martinez and Buendia quarantining I would have thought.

                      • After a horrible start to the season, Arsenal have picked up a bit of form. WWWDW last five and the young guns are really impressing.

Seen that #smithout is trending after the win against Aston Villa, is it really that time already? Villa were poor tonight, but I think some are jumping the gun there.

                        • Yeah there was always going to be an overreaction to Arsenal given their tough start (I actually won a decent chunk of money on Brentford beating them in the opening game) but now that they've got some players back and the fixtures are a bit kinder they're showing that they're still actually a decent team.

As are Villa so I really don't get the #smithout brigade. I think that'd be mad and someone like Newcastle will be licking their lips at someone like that becoming available.
