Max Cady definitely has to be in this. Awesome villain.

HAL 9000 too.

Jaws.

And for a bit of fun, Humungus from Mad Max 2, who can be described as a retro post-apocalyptic S&M villain.

For more fun, and almost a cameo, the Stay Puft Marshmellow man from Ghostbusters. Is he not a highlight of everyone's childhood movie memories? Sashaband excluded, of course.

The Greatest hero / Villian movies? Westerns. For me they are like one tingly morality play with Rugged heroes and evil villians, white hats vs black hats and the good guys are always strong and true, and the bad guys are always evil and wear black hats so they are easily identifiable

Frank as Henry Fonda in "Once Upon a Time in the West." - HE KILLS KIDS

Capt. Red legs played by Bill Mckinney in The Outlaw Josey Wales

Little Bill Daggett played by Gene Hackman – Unforgiven – Directed by Clint Eastwood Or John Herod played by Gene Hackman in The Quick and The Dead – directed by Sam Rami

Ben Wade played by Russell Crowe in 3:10 to Yuma.

Lee Marvin as Liberty Vallence in The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallence

(this list is fake people, if it had real people in movies number 3 would be Casey Afleck as that coward Robert Ford in the Assassination of Jessie James by that Coward Robert Ford)

Kurtz has a great presence in a great, great movie. And he's not even seen for most of it. But Apocalypse Now is a Coppola film. Thinking about it, Kubrick didn't really do villains much. I guess Jack Torrance counts.

There's another, love Roy Batty.

EDIT: Here's one from left-field, especially to those in the Northern Hemisphere. Jake "The Muss" Heke, from the excellent New Zealand film, Once Were Warriors.

I think he qualifies. He's definitely the antagonist of the movie, unless the Jungle itself qualifies.

No way Pyle's a villain. The above post has it right, Sgt. Hartman is definitely the villain, if the movie has one.

No. Sounds like you're trying to draw parallels between Pyle and Kurtz and insinuating that they both went insane and thus aren't true villains, is that right? Becuase first of all, there's an argument to be had over whether Kurtz went insane or not, and also they're quite different because Pyle killed his bully, while Kurtz...yeah, could sit here for an age listing his atrocities.

I has indecise between Angel Eyes and Tuco but ,in my opinion,Tuco gets the nod.
After some thoughts i think we can even consider Blondie as a villain (or antihero),after all blondie screw Tuco from his share of the bounty money, killed 3 bounty hunters that got to Tuco first(we dont know if they where good or bad),left Tuco in middle of desert tied up and with no water, screw both Angel Eyes and Tuco in the 3 man showdown by not writing anything in the rock(if he died none would get the gold) and he even sented Tuco to the duel without ammo

gezz the real hero was Tuco :P

My thoughts exactly. I havent seen all of Full Metal Jacket for quite a while (I saw a chunk at the beginning early last week), but when you are citing a character who isnt central to the plot, nor is it someone you can even remember the name of, clearly isnt the villian.

I'd argue that in a good chunk of Vietnam War movies the actual villain is the war itself. This probably fits Apocalypse Now better than any movie, since the war is what has driven Kurtz to the brink of madness ("The Horror"), and is what is really foiling Martin Sheen throughout the movie.

Another villain that just popped into my head is Ben Affleck's character from Dazed and Confused "Fred O'Bannon". The scene where the freshman cover him in paint is just gold, as is the scene early on when he is about to beat them, and the mom comes out with the shotgun.

Think I might put on Apocalypse Now tonight. I often consider it, but mostly decide against it because of it's length (Redux especially). But I pretty much agree with what you're saying. If a villain has to be a character, there are no villains in those two movies. Any good war movie will not take a side for starters. I can think of a couple WWII movies told from a German perspective that took no side, or more to the point, taking sides was completely irrelevant. Shit, now I want to watch Das Boot too, and that's even longer. It is indeed a long, long way to Tipperary.

Haha, O'Bannion definitely falls into the fun category. Dazed and Confused is the best teen movie ever, and it really hasn't aged, 16 years on. And it's short, so it wins. I'll be putting it on soon.
