Default Eric Young's New Gimmick

Is EY's new gimmick just a rip off of Jerichos' in WWE?

Watching the 200th episode Young did a promo explaining why he did what he did, he was tired of being the funny guy and now wants to be taken seriously.

Not really. Eric Young has been like that on and off for a while now. He started becoming serious about it around the time MEM/FL started, but still kinda played the joke character.

I mean you could say they may be similar, but eh..

Not entirely.

Chris Jericho's gimmick is based upon his self-righteousness.

Eric Young wants to be taken seriously and does not want to kiss ass to the fans anymore. Young is more Anti-USA

Both men do place their beliefs above the fans, which is similar

However, i don't think it's a complete rip-off

think ey could do well as a heel. in team canada he played a heel but was still a comedy charicter. now that he's finaly being used in a good way, no more super ey, i see big things in his future. as for the cj reference i dont realy see the simalarity. but where can this group go, the world title is closed of with the mem and u cant have 2 hell factions fueding so that rules out tag at the moment so there realy is only the x division.

No and Yes. I won't say that it is a ripoff, but I will say that Jericho's reasoning for turning heel, probably served as inspiration to Eric Young's promo.

Storylines are often recycled. Jericho wasn't the first to turn heel because he is tired of entertaining the crowd.

The one thing Young and TNA needs to do is make this storyline their own. They're giving Eric a stable to lead. Why? I don't know, but they are, so this must mean that they have bigger plans for Eric. How long will it take for him to win the TNA Title? Assuming that he wins.

Just the vision of EY wearing the TNA title would make me change the channel. I honestly repsect EY, but theres just too many other guys that I would like to see with the title before EY. Guys like AJ, Joe, Morgan, Kaz, Hernandez, even Lethal.

Lets just hope that this Alliance is more so relegated to the X-division and midcard.

I like the push that TNA has given to EY, but EY needs to step up to the challenge and I have to say that it has been so-so based on his lackluster promos.

EY's new direction does have that Jericho vibe, but as it's been noted, the 180 personality turn isn't new. Even the Rock did it when he switched from Rocky.

Problem I have is that I don't buy EY as a "boss" character. Unless World Elite is just using him as a fall guy decoy boss, I can't buy him as a leader. It's almost as believable as when Spike Dudley was being booked as the boss.

lol....that's the same way that I feel about EY as a potential champ. I would much rather see Nash with the strap and I could care less for old man Nash. At least, with Nash we would get some good promos. Where as with EY...his main selling point is his or was his ability to entertain and since he's no longer selling that, then he might as well just go out of business. lol

I also don't see Nash's so called great promo skills. He has a good promo once in a while.

Nash always delivers the goods in the promo department. Chet Lemon and "It's about money, not friends" where two of the best pieces of mic work I've seen all year.

As for EY, I like him. His promo to Sting and the World Elite promo where two of his standout promos since becoming serious and I think he's good in the ring. Maybe not world champion material as LHARR suggested, but upper midcarder, yeah.

EYs ok but..

Nash says the same shit each time. Its neither interesting nor anything that furthers a fued. Scott Hall got screwed cause I got paid! oooohh! Its all about the money! Who gives a fuck? Aint no one paying to see your old ass in the ring anymore.

It's his character. Just like Jericho's is about being screwed out of fans, just like Jeff Jarrett wants whats good for the company etc... His promo on Sting after Slammi gave him another 5 months in my good books.

Other people either don't play as dull a character or don't make their character completly shitty.

Whenever Kev gets on the mix you know what he's gonna say. He's so called great promo against Sting was a typical Nash promo. We knew what was gonna happen...we knew what he was gonna say..it just took longer to say something he coulda said in about 10 seconds. You can't engage with him at all. He's a terrible wrestler. His "great" announcing skills are ok at best. If anything Booker carried him..Nash is simply overrated.

see, I kind of disagree here. While Nash really isn't known for the swerves (and when he does, its usually not the one people want), his ability to talk is there. He isn't an over the top character. His character is a guy that is out for personal gain and grouping with people with similar qualities. To do The Rock style promos would kill his character. He's always had charisma but fairly toned down compared to others.

and honestly, the guy got cool points with me a year or two back when he faked like he was going to jump over the top rope to a group on the outside. His running to the ropes with an intense look on his face, catching ropes and stopping. Pausing, then doing a gesture with his hands basically saying "eh, fuck it" and staying in the ring was absolutely great.

I remember seeing it, but I cant put my finger on the date...I think it was Final Resolution 2008(January 08, not December). I'm not positive though. It could have been an Impact as well.

As for the new EY:

I like the head shave, but I cant get over the voice. His voice still gets annoying after a while. The angle now with EY hanging out with the Mafia does gives his charater more cred. I like the fact that hes using the controversial pile driver as his finisher which gives him gimmick an edge. I will take back a few of the things that I've said about him, but im still not all that impressed with EY. There have been some improvements though.

WWE steals manyof TNAs moves and ideas or "borrow" so what the fuck is the problem with them getting something back from the WWE? Nothing! Every wrestling company "borrows" something from others when they see something is hot, awesome, dope or whatever. Hearing J.R. call one of Morrison's kicks a "pele' kick" made me almost spit out my drink this past weekend...when clearly this "pele' kick" has been in AJ Styles' moveset forever in a day..same with Michelle McCool using the Styles Clash lol. So please don't hate on someone for "borrowing" . It sounds so damn childish.

well let's see, the MEM do it, so maybe it's meant to add a homomgenous feel to the World Elite and MEM.

As has been noted wrestling organizations borrow ideas, moves, storylines from each other all the time, so even if EY is "ripping of" Chris Jericho, and by simple logic, TNA is "ripping off" the WWE i don't really see it as that big of a deal.

When was the last time WWE borrowed anything from TNA? Nothing.

But you are on to something. Almost everything has already been done by WWE or WCW at this point. TNA cant help but have similarities with WWE or WCW.

As of right now, I like it.

But, only if there is a payoff for EY. This is his first legit gimmick he's had in TNA and he had better not screw this up, or its back to either pyro fearing Eric or Super Eric *cringe* (or TNA being afraid of going with it)

Eric's new gimmick works because TNA really had been using him just for comedy for so long.

I remember when he had a pretty good match for his freedom against Bobby Roode and a few weeks later he was back to being a comedy act. Eric Young in my opinion has always been seriously underrated and if TNA had a Television title he'd be a perfect candidate for champion.

He is pulling this heel turn off well, and if Hernadez joins then they could be unstoppable. Glad to see them giving him a chance at leading a group, and he has actually did pretty good.

A Wrestling Company cant steal finishing moves...that makes no fucking sense.

Wrestlers steal moves...So if you want to get picky...Most moves done in TNA and WWE were stolen from someone.

Saying The WWE stole the Syles Clash / Pelle Kick makes no fucking sense. A wrestler might have...but just about every move ever done in the ring is stolen from someone or another.

There hasn't been an original move set in over 75 years if you wanna act like that.

God I hate fans who MARK for one company over another. Makes them look even stupider when they share their opinions.

Hi Fives my homie from Shaolin.

but back on topic:
I like the Eirc Young gimmick change. He was due for something other than being the happy go lucky clown. I think that ran its course and reach the ceiling of its potential.

The answer still applies. Her answer to having the move was something along the lines of "some guy in TNA uses it". I never said she cant steal it...its just obvious she stole the move from a guy working for TNA.

I didnt show any signs of being a mark AT ALL. I stated a fact. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Your argument pretty much goes for the whole of wrestling. TNA steal stuff crom WWE all te time and TNA gets shitfor it. Its a constant double standard.

im really happy to see eric young getting a serious push. i always thought he was severely underrated and possed alot more charisma and humor then most ppl in tna did. as regards to being world champ, y not? the main event scene in tna seems like it is soon to be wide open w jarrett, angle and sting probably heading out the door so i can definitely see at least a test run title reign for young. the only reason he wont get it is if we find out he was only getting pushed thanx to jeff jarrett, in which case young could end up getting depushed once jarrett goes.

Thumbs down Eric Young is just AWFUL!!

What does anyone in TNA see in this clown? He looks like a midget and I've yet to see any great ring work from him.

And now we're supposed to believe that he's a leader of this huge stable??

I would be happy if I never saw him again.

I partially agree, but that is generally because his intial time as a comedy act makes it very hard for me to take him seriously.

I don't mind him as a mouthpiece, but he can't back it up in the ring that have seen so far. However WE seems to taken seriously every 2nd week or so.

I just got into TNA a few months ago, so I like Eric Young's mic skills and ring work. However, I did notice that Eric is fat. In his match with Morgan last night when Morgan went for his One Arm Drop, he was losing his grip on Young and a camera angle showed Young hanging on and it was not flattering at all.
