Default His Name is Dolph Ziggler

His Name Is Dolph Ziggler

Haven’t done a column in a while because of work and other annoyances in my life. Any ways I decided to write this column about one of the fastest rising stars in the WWE Universe. His name is …. Dolph Ziggler. Yea I know its not as good a name as John Cena or Randy Orton but after several gimmicks Nick Nemeth may have found himself a winner. Ziggler first appeared in several backstage segments on Raw in which he would introduce himself to his fellow superstars with a handshake and his now famous line “My name is Dolph Ziggler”. Now he’s one of the main guys on Smackdown, and probably the second best heel on the roster right now.( You cant call CM Punk a heel cause he’s still in transition) But before I get into really talking about him I want to give you all a little background on Nick Nemeth.

He was an amateur wrestler in college at Kent State, where he set the record for most career wins. After college he was approached by WWE and was soon signed to a developmental deal and was sent of to OVW. A little after a year of being there he was finally called up to the main roster as the caddie to Kerwin White a.k.a Chavo Guerrero. White was probably the worse most stereotypical gimmick I have ever seen in pro wrestling, Chavo gave up his Latino heritage and was now a white golfer. He rode to the ring in a golf cart and Nemeth followed him with a golf bag. His time on the main roster was short lived because after the death of Eddie Guerrero the Kerwin White character was dropped and Nemeth was sent back to OVW.

Back at OVW he was placed into a five man stable known as The Spirit Squad, which were five male cheerleaders. While with the SS he was known as Nicky, I think he was the one who did the leg drop of the top or was that Kenny oh god who cares. Even thought the gimmick wasn’t the best they were put into a high level feud representing Vince McMahon in his feud with first Shawn Michaels then a reformed DX. The Squad were also successful in attaining the tag team championships by defeating Kane and The Big Show. They defended the titles under the Firebird Rule, which meant any two of them could defend the titles. Even though they were basically buried by DX, it was an opportunity to work with two of the best in the business. Then after the DX feud they went on to feud with Ric Flair and his legends. After dropping the titles to Flair and Piper, it was soon apparent that the teams time together was running out. Finally The Spirit Squad was killed off in a five on three handicap match against DX and Flair.

The Spirit Squad (Kenny, Nicky, Mitch, Jonny, and Mikey)
(January 23, 2006- November 27, 2006)

He was then sent back again to OVW, where he formed a tag team with Mike Mondo known as The Frat Pack. Soon after they were transferred to FCW. Nemeth would go on to win the tag championships twice once with Brad Allen then with Gavin Spears. With a little more experience under his belt he was again called up to the main roster as we know him now Dolph Ziggler. Then after a short while on the roster he was suspended 30 day for a wellness violation. After the suspension he made his in ring debut against none other than The Animal Batista. He got in a good amount of offense even knocking the big man off his feet. But like most heel wrestlers he started off his career with a lost. He was soon lost in the card and was rarely ever seen on Raw. I remember him being in a team with Santino for some matches, but that’s really all I do remember from his time on Raw.

Then in this year Supplemental Draft he was drafted to Smackdown where his rise to the main event began. He arrived with a bang on Smackdown defeating the then US Champion MVP. He started a short but entertaining feud with MVP over the Championship but was never able to win it. Ziggler then moved on into a feud with The Punjabi Playboy or The Great Khali, don’t know what’s so great about him. This is the first feud that got Ziggler higher on the card and even a match at the ppv The Bash. He ducked Khali for weeks then they faced off in a No DQ match at The Bash, which he won after interference from Kane. Currently Ziggler is in the beginning of feud with Rey Mysterio over the Intercontinental Championship. At Night of Champions he will get his shot but I don’t see him winning the belt. It has also been said that Ziggler is the mystery partner of Y2J Chris Jericho at the same PPV as one half of the Unified Tag Team Champions.

Ok that’s really too much background I think I really turned this into a bio instead of a column but here is what I really want to write about. This past Thursday on WWE Superstars Ziggler challenged Rey Rey to championship match. The promo was alright between the two even though Dolph only got a few words in. The landscape of the WWE main event is basically the same it was three years ago. The same faces are in the same matches against the same opponents. But we are starting to see a change with the arrival of CM Punk, John Morrison, and Dolph Ziggler. If the WWE is serious about building new stars these three are the perfect start. Sure there is still other like Jack Swagger or The Hart Dynasty but I think they still need to put in more time on the main roster before they cant break through. Ziggler has shown that he has the ability to put on great matches just watch his last match against Morrison and that is proof of that. He is still a little rough of the mic cause all he’s got going for him is the name thing but with time I can see him start to carry his own.

I would like to see a pairing between him and Jericho but I think that in the long run it will hurt him more than help him. He’s getting his first shot at a title at a PPV this Sunday and the match he puts on will decide if he’s ready or if he needs a couple more matches. I would love to see him win the belt but not on his first try maybe not even after the second but he does need to win it soon. A feud between him and Morrison over the belt or even the number 1 contender would be gold. These two really mesh well together and they both could use the exposure. I’ve also heard his name being tossed around as the first opponent for The Undertaker when he makes his return. I say no to this its too soon for him to be put into a feud maybe even a match with Undertaker. Hell it took Shelton over three years to get his first match with Undertaker and I really enjoyed the matches they had together. Also I like the Maria thing he has going on right now. He could use her and play the jealous boyfriend with some other dude, every ones a sucker for these kinds of feuds.

Right now I am running down the Smackdown roster I see a couple of feuds I’d like to see him in. Finlay is the go to guy when you need a good match with younger talent just look at his last couple of matches against Tyson Kidd. R-Truth they both are athletic guys how can put on a good show. But the one that would be his ticket to the main event would be against Jeff Hardy. Hardy is probably the most over guy of the current roster. They need to do this before Hardy leaves if he does decide to. This way Dolph can get over and they get a good use for Hardy but the big if is if he is truly leaving. His move set makes great use of his athletic skills and his finisher isn’t that bad he needs to name it though cause every finisher needs a name. (The Diggler)

Only time will tell us if he is the next Mr. Perfect who he is often compared to or if he is just another guy who dyed his hair blonde and did a couple of sit ups.

If you did read the entire thing thanks hope you liked it if you didn’t leave feedback tell me what I’m doing wrong or what I could to better.

BCR's feedback is Nexttobelost (see what I did there?).

I did notice a few errors in this NTBL such as not using commas when needed. Commas are important as they break up a sentence and keep the flow going nicely. This was done a few times and if your having trouble with that, read the sentence out load to help you see if it sounds right. I would have also liked a bit more opinion as the first 80% of this column seemed like a wikipedia article about Dolph's career thus far. The last few paragraphs where the best bit about this as you let your mind free up a bit and explain a few potential feuds for Dolph but they could have been expanded on. Why wouldn't Dolph benefit to much from being Jericho's tag team partner? Why is it too soon to feud with The Undertaker etc...

As for Dolph, I was first impressed by him in his match with Morrison recently. It could have been Morrison's bumping skills though.

Wasn't too bad, could have been better. Read you next time.

The grammatical errors weren't all that bad considering you seemed a bit rusty, overall though it was good. My only serious issue with this was that the part that you said you want to right, the P.O.P. as JB would put it, seemed a tad rushed and I found myself racing as I read it, as though my mind was trying to catch up with what you were saying but it was fat and out of breath so it couldn't. I'm not sure what I just said there, but, basicly, try not to rush it and please expand on your opinion even more next time.

Also, I liked that you made some attempt at mixing opinion into your bio, since many columnists just wikipedia their shit when doing a bio.

Give me some more reading material real soon, or O.J. will kill you.

I don't give much of a shit about how good your grammar is so I'll ignore that.

As for the content....I can counter your Wikipedia logic with google logic.

The one thing I LOVED about Ziggler was his theme music before they changed it. Now he is nothing more than unfixable...unless they change the music then he is totally fixable.

I won't lie, I like Ziggler and his fun as hell bumping. But people anointing him as the next Mr. PErfect? Let's hope not. Curt Hennig had some pretty good pre-WWF stuff, but his run as Mr. Perfect was pretty garbage, sans the one match with Bret and the sick promos. Maybe this push is a thanks for the Spirit Squad debacle?

What ever did happen to Mikey, Jonny, and Mitch?

Thanks to your 'bio', I have now realized that Smackdown's mid-card and main event is cluterred with past drug test failees. Ziggler, Morrison, and Hardy have all pissed the wrong fluid over the years. Thank God for Punk of course.

Nicely done NTBL. A few grammar errors but let's not be picky. I liked the content, and that's what's great.

Hey, i thought this was an ok column. I think you could have expanded more, and you make some mistakes, e.g. It's the freebird rule, not the firebird rule. However, it did keep my attention so well done.
