Default Top Black Performers in Wrestling

Humoring the MAI/Troll/Person setting back black people everywhere, here's something I came up with purely based on speculation and personal opinion. Agree? Disagree? Why? I'd like to hear your thoughts

Overall Athletic Ability:
  • Shelton Benjamin
  • Jay Lethal
  • The Rock
  • Bobby Lashley
  • Elijah Burke and/or Kofi Kingston

Overall Wrestling Ability:
  • 2 Cold Scorpio
  • Tazz
  • Shelton Benjamin
  • Elix Skipper
  • Montel Vontavious Porter

Overall Charisma:
  • The Rock
  • Booker T
  • The Godfather
  • Monty Brown
  • The Human Tornado

Overall Drawing Power:
  • The Rock
  • Booker T
  • New Jack
  • Ron Simmons
  • The Godfather

Another question is that with a seeming excess of prominent black wrestlers in the top two companies of North America, do you think that there is a racial stigma in the world of professional wrestling?

What about Mark Henry? He may not be the most mobile or agile, but he's a good vet to have in the locker room, especially for the mostly un-initiated ECW locker room.

I'm not doubting it, I just never knew...

Tazz is black? I just thought he had a darker skin tone. What nationality I thought he was, never gave that a thought.

Tazz or Taz's real name is Peter Senerchia and um he is billed as being from Red Hook which is mostly italian american, Taz is Italian-American but yeah.

I think it was Tony Atlas who said that it is beneficial to be a Black Wrestler because there are less blacks in the sport, so when a promoter is trying to capture the dynamic or to not be shown as a racist then you will receive a push, i think he used Virgil as an example.

Oh and for clarification. The reason I didn't include the likes of Koko B. Ware or Tony Atlas or JYD or even Rocky Johnson was because I wasn't born during that era and thus my knowledge of those performers is slim to limited.

Which is why I asked what are other people's opinions. So they can teach me something.

In that case my previous post would have been of no use to whatsoever.

My view is that guys like Koko, Tony Atlas, JYD, Ernie Ladd, Abdullah The Butcher, SD Jones and Rocky Johnson to name a few really laid the groundwork and paved the way for guys like Elijah Burke and Jay Lethal but wrestling has changed so much over the years that I can't really make a valid comparison across the generational gap.

My knowledge, similarly to you, is not in depth on this subject matter but I have watched a lot of older matches and think it is fair to say that without the JYDs and Rocky Johnsons of the industry there wouldn't be the Burkes and Benjamins.

However, I could be wrong in some of the things i've said and will happily stand corrected.

I've been waiting on this thread. I need to represent my fellow African Americans. Since I was born in 83, I guess I was around to see it all. Here is my best black wrestlers. This was very easy for me, some make be confuse a little, but I'll explain later.

20. Brickhouse Brown (Very Athletic-Great Mat Work, he probably was the Shelton Benjamin of the late 80's early 90's bad timing, too many stars)
19. KoKo B Ware (He had a great kids gimmick)/Godfather (Great Mature Gimmick)
18. Ahmed Johnson/Bobby Lashley (still bitter over these two. The biggest dissapointment IMO.)
17. Mr.T (without Mr. T celebrity name, would WM be here, Who didn't watch the A-Team? Ask somebody)
16. Slick (Manager),Theodore Long (Crooked Ref, Turns Manager, Turns GM)
15. Pistol Pez Whatley (Willie B Hert)
14. Awesome Kong (The Best Female Wrestler Today)
13. The Natural Butch Reid (Loads of Charisma)
12. New Jack (Legit Badass/The reason I watched ECW)
11. 2 Cold Scorpio (The Most Underrated Wrestler of all Times/Never gets credit for his style that paved the way for the Cruiserweights/X Division-No Scorpio means no 450 Splash or Moonsault Legdrop or any other move he decided to come up with)
10. Iceman King Parsons (The best Mic Worker of all times)
09. Ron Simmons (The Leader/First Black World Champion)
08. Bad News Brown (THE TRUTH)
07. Jacqueline (What a 17 Times Womens Champ/The First WWF Women Division Champ Restart/Help restart the Knockout Division/Chyna before there was a Chyna, Kevin Sullivan's Manager Enough Said)
06. Brother Devon Dudley (One half of the arguably The Greatest Tag Team in Wrestling History)
05. Shelton Benjamin (Best Wrestler)
04. Kamala (Drawing Power 80's Heat)/Abdullah The Butcher (Hardcore Legend)
03. Booker T (Accomplished Wrestler)
02. Junkyard Dog (Trend-Setter)
01. The Rock (Superstar)

Honorable Mentions:
Mark Henry, Jazz, Action Jackson, 'Wildman' Marc Mero, D'lo Brown,

Last but not least

Dusty Rhodes, Akeem 'The African' Dream, & John Cena

Future
I see MVP being on a lot of yougins top 10
Cryme Tyme if everything goes well are over too.
Human Tornado is a fav all ready.

Blacks has definitely made their mark in professional wrestling.

^^^^^^ Great list.

Other wrestlers like ICE TRAIN and Swoll and 4x4 could of been good I think had they been used right. I'm trying to think of ones who havent been named yet

Ron H2O Waterman
Charles The Hammer Evans
Slick
Zeus (hey he did wrestle once or twice)
Consquences Creed

Not sure if I can name anymore

My list, off the top of my head...

I'm not going to include The Rock for 2 reasons -

(1) If I did, he'd be number 1 anyway, which would make my list less interesting, and

(2) He's half-Samoan. In the same way, I wouldn't put him on a list of the all-time greatest Samoans. The Rock was so great, he transcended wrestling and even race, I guess. My point is - The Rock gets enough praise; he doesn't need to also get the rub as "The Best Black Wrestler Ever." I'd just like to let someone else get that honor.

1. Booker T
2. Ron Simmons
3. Shelton Benjamin
4. Junkyard Dog
5. 2 Cold Scorpio
6. Norman Smiley
7. Bad News Brown
8. Abdullah The Butcher
9. Ernest "The Cat" Miller
10. Antonio "MVP" Banks
11. Ron Killings
12. Bobby Lashley
13. Kamala
14. Koko B. Ware
15. Mark Henry

ive recently asked a few people who are bigger ECW fans then me and the answers ive heard that Taz is of Sicilian decent which is very close to africa and has much moor infuence then mainland italy.

Abdullah The Butcher should be concidered one of the best wrestlers of all time.

I had to chuckle when I saw Dusty Rhodes! Cena and Akeem the One Man Gang Dream was obvious, but it takes a master to put Dusty on that list.

Glad someone mentioned Action Jackson. Had the pleasure of actually seeing the man wrestle. Probably not as awesome as he was in the 80's, but he was still good.

I always enjoyed D'Lo for his combination of size and agility.

Bad News Brown=Bad Ass! Nuff said.

Booker T has been a favorite of mine since the Harlem Heat days.

Will add more faves when I am more awake.

10- D'Lo Brown (way too much underrated IMO)
9- Jay Lethal (very good athleticism)
8- Jacqueline (what can i say? one of the best women wrestlers of all times)
7- D-Von Dudley (half, not counting Spike, of the best tag team in the History of professional wrestling, IMO)
6- Bobby Lashley (good wrestler, great entertainer)
5- Homicide (very cool to watch. Does some crazy moves. Great athleticism)
4- MVP (One of the hottest prospects of this business ... with the experience he'll gain he might become one of the best mic workers ever ... has loads of charisma)
3- Shelton Benjamin (just very good wrestler with awesome athleticism)
2- Booker T (great wrestler which i think just lacks a bit more in-ring ability ... apart from that this guy has it all)
1- The Rock (same as Booker, but The Rock is just over the top in every other field)
