The PEN15 Mightier:
What If You Can't See Me?
For over 5 years, John Cena has been the #1 face of the entire WWE. He is the top merchandise seller, the go-to guy to sell a PPV, and an all around great worker inside and outside the ring. Fans have been divided on Cena's push for longer than many realize, with most of his time at the top creating a mixed reaction in every city the Raw brand visits. For every fan that cheers and chants his name, there's a counter culture of haters who love to assassinate the popularity of the Doctor of Thuganomics. The controversial reactions have long been foil to the detractors keeping hope alive for a heel turn.
Lately, the demand for the John Cena heel turn has been reintroduced with the idea that he could lead the Nexus. The fantasy booking has been rampant online, with dreams of the return of a heel, rapping Cena, dancing in the eyes of smarks everywhere. Never before has the plea for Cena to turn against the fans been so strong and so realistically possible. The WWE no doubt reads online wrestling sites, and I believe that whether or not the plan to turn Cena was in effect before booking Summerslam, they are strongly considering it now. It seems that everyone is ready to boo once My Time Is Now hits the in-house speakers, with the consensus being that everyone wants it to happen.
Well... not me.
Summerslam and Aftermath
The most common scenario seems to be having him turn on his team in the 7 vs 7 mega main event on August 15th in Los Angeles on Pay Per View. The rumors got stronger once it was announced that this match would now be an elimination match usually found at Survivor Series. The obvious fantasy booking seems to have Cena turn on whoever was left on his team, leading the Nexus to get the final pinfall and celebrate the final moments of Summerslam with their hands raised along with the newly-turned Cena.
To the fans hoping and expecting this to happen, who will Cena turn against? Turning against Edge or Chris Jericho seems counter productive as they are already heels. Perhaps the WWE is expecting to turn one or both of them face to have some fodder for Cena to face, but I highly doubt it. Edge spent 4 months as a face early in 2010, and it seemed the 'E lost faith in his abilities, as he turned heel immediately once drafted to Raw from Smackdown. Jericho is always possible, but would anyone's face turn be needed or warranted? Randy Orton is heavily becoming the next face star on Raw, why would they want to tarnish his reactions by turning another long standing heel? It's not going to happen.
This leaves John Morrison, R-Truth, and Great Khali on the main roster. While pushing someone fresh to the main event sounds like a perfect scenario, it's completely illogical. Khali is in no way the man to face off against Cena the villain. He can't command the attention of the entire WWE Universe in a high profile match like the one proposed. Plus, he's not exactly fresh. John Cena will need some credibility to help push the new direction in his career, and would therefore need some victories. That would mean any chances of pushing Truth or Morrison up the ladder would be met with losses. They might not be career threatening in any way, they could always bounce back some other time. But the fans will want someone to stand up against Cena, and will want to back that person up 100%. A loss early like this would hinder those chances.
That would leave Bret Hart from the team of 7. The perfect world ideology would be to have the Hitman bring in enforcers to take out Cena immediately following SummerSlam, since obviously Hart could not jump in the ring himself. So would we see the next PPVs headlined by John Cena vs the Hart Dynasty? I am a huge Tyson Kidd fan, but in no way is that a marquee match up. Without looking outside of Raw, the Hitman would have only Randy Orton or HHH to choose from. How lucky would we be, as fans, to witness another Cena vs HHH or Orton feud? Of course, the hero and villain roles would be reversed, but how could anyone honestly expect that to be fresh enough?
The logic just isn't there.
Nexus
Throughout all this talk, the mention of Nexus has been relatively insignificant and nominal.
Precisely.
Next to the massive storyline of a heel John Cena, the Nexus would take a major backseat. Raw already has Sheamus holding the WWE Championship. Add a dynamo heel Cena, and Nexus suddenly seems inconsequential. The weaknesses of the individual members are well hidden at the moment, but without the top talent in the ring against them, their green will be on full display. This isn't a knock on anyone in particular, but in Paul Heyman-esque booking, the Nexus have used the little ability they have to make a ginormous mark on Raw. Already, the shine was losing the luster last week during the initial 7 vs 7 Elimination Match on Raw.
Cena would become the focus of Nexus, and would therefore erase all the momentum Wade Barrett and the other NXT Season 1 rookies have made. Relegated to 3rd string heels, anything the Nexus would do would pale in comparison to their debut pummelings. The targets so far have been nothing but the most dominant of names, John Cena in particular. If he were to side with Nexus, who would be left for the Magnificent Seven to take aim at? Orton perhaps. HHH is another possibility. But they'd most likely be busy with Cena himself. That would leave very little competition outside of dropping down to the midcard.
Now, I'm not trying to say the Nexus should be main event for life. With the exception of Wade Barrett, I don't think anyone in the current Nexus will ever be main event material no matter how much time they get to develop. But for Nexus to succeed as a whole, their dominion should extend a bit further than 2 months. Obviously for Barrett to succeed at the top of the echelon, he should stand out above his peers. Would a stable lead by John Cena give Barrett that sort of space? He would no doubt go from leader to second in command. And if neither of them are after the WWE Championship, Barrett would be even further down the ladder.
Raw Is Lame
In general, the Raw brand is stale and malodorous. This is a oft-mentioned defense for those who argue for John Cena to become villainous. To that I say: a single turn will not alter the general anaemic nature of Monday Nights. He'd still need a surrounding cast to work with. Further examination shows how ineffectual Cena would work as heel.
It took the injection of Sheamus to make the main event scene anything resembling novel. Think about that: a rookie with only months of main roster experience was suddenly propelled into a WWE Championship match in order to give Raw originality. What happened to the slow push? Ever since the instant success of Brock Lesnar and others, the WWE seems to be short sighted when looking for the next breakout star. If someone doesn't connect immediately with the core audience, then they are seemingly forgotten until it best suits Vince and co. In the meantime, Raw continues with the same cast of characters as the year before. And the year before that.
And before that.
Now, this wouldn't be so detrimental if the characters evolved in some way, but most of them don't. Because of this, no matter what alignment John Cena is portrayed as, he's not wrestling anyone new. The only new opponent for Cena on Raw is Wade Barrett. Why the fuck would you instead have him turn heel and side with him? Heel Cena ends up going against HHH and Orton. Said it before, I'll say it again: fuck that.
If you want to elevate talent to take on a heel Cena, I dare you to find them. The best rising stars on the Red brand are already booed. Mr Money in the Bank, The Miz is easily the top prospect to main event in the near future. Ted DiBiase has long been discussed as the next midcarder to move up (though I fail to see anything special in him whatsoever). Add The Nexus, William Regal, Zack Ryder, and big Ezekiel Jackson to the list. All of them make better opponents for Cena.
Now, before you counter with Evan Bourne, R-Truth or John Morrison, let me remind you how inefficient they would be against a dastardly Cena. WWE booking is predictable in that they don't usually let someone lose the big matches when their characters are most vulnerable, like during a swing towards technico or rudo for example. As for the wrestler themselves:
Bourne
Useless on the microphone, and still could use a United States title run before really testing the waters above. He could win a fluke victory or two, but he's in no position to come out on top of Cena clean without John getting his heat back somehow. Would make for a decent TV rivalry, but this could never main event a PPV.
Morrison
Also useless with the stick, and is rumored to turn heel soon as well. Should he stay face, I expect him to main event in the near future, but his rise needs to be solid. Another tease towards the glass ceiling, only to fail again, would be a major detriment to his career. He'd need the victory at this point, and he wouldn't see it against Cena.
R-Truth
The one wrestler who could easily survive a squash feud with Cena is the least likely to get it. I'm a fan of Truth, and I expect big things from him. But he's the essential midcard wrestler. He's a bit too goofy to take seriously. He could get the fluke win on Cena, but fail ultimately and it wouldn't really hurt him a bit. The downside of it is that Truth should be taken seriously if facing off against the poster boy of the WWE of 5 years. He should go through some character development first. I don't mind the rapping and general crowd interaction. But it's not main event qualities in the WWE.
Babyface for life?
Now is NOT the time to turn Cena heel. If you really want Cena to have an innovative character, switch him to Smackdown, even if it's only for the 2 months between the Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania. Cena winning the Rumble match, only to challenge whoever is World Champion on the Blue Brand would shake up the entire company. My guess is that Cena stays on Raw because as the leader of the company, he should be on the lead show. Well, the lead show fucking sucks. Raw is a shithole of a wrestling show. Putting Cena against anybody on the Smackdown roster would be much more engaging than on Raw. Undertaker, Swagger, Rey Mysterio, CM Punk, Kane, and even the Big Show are all relatively more engrossing as new opponents for The Champ than anyone on Monday Nights.
Cena needs something new and exciting. No one can argue that. Yet, everyone is forgetting that at the moment he has it: he is trying to join forces with heels and faces as a combined force to take on the Nexus. But for some reason, the internet wrestling community is at a call to arms to have this unique angle come to an abrupt and terrible end, just because they are tired of face Cena. It is completely illogical and absurd to demand such a drastic measure at such an inopportune time. Heel Cena is not a bad thing, but the timing is wrong.
Besides, face John Cena still has one last person to turn to against the Nexus... and you have until the count of 5 to guess who that person is.
