The PEN15 Mightier – What If You Can't See Me? -NXT 4-

    The PEN15 Mightier:
What If You Can't See Me?

For over 5 years, John Cena has been the #1 face of the entire WWE. He is the top merchandise seller, the go-to guy to sell a PPV, and an all around great worker inside and outside the ring. Fans have been divided on Cena's push for longer than many realize, with most of his time at the top creating a mixed reaction in every city the Raw brand visits. For every fan that cheers and chants his name, there's a counter culture of haters who love to assassinate the popularity of the Doctor of Thuganomics. The “controversial” reactions have long been foil to the detractors keeping hope alive for a heel turn.

Lately, the demand for the John Cena heel turn has been reintroduced with the idea that he could lead the Nexus. The fantasy booking has been rampant online, with dreams of the return of a heel, rapping Cena, dancing in the eyes of smarks everywhere. Never before has the plea for Cena to turn against the fans been so strong and so realistically possible. The WWE no doubt reads online wrestling sites, and I believe that whether or not the plan to turn Cena was in effect before booking Summerslam, they are strongly considering it now. It seems that everyone is ready to boo once “My Time Is Now” hits the in-house speakers, with the consensus being that everyone wants it to happen.

    Well... not me.

    Summerslam and Aftermath
The most common scenario seems to be having him turn on his team in the 7 vs 7 mega main event on August 15th in Los Angeles on Pay Per View. The rumors got stronger once it was announced that this match would now be an elimination match usually found at Survivor Series. The obvious fantasy booking seems to have Cena turn on whoever was left on his team, leading the Nexus to get the final pinfall and celebrate the final moments of Summerslam with their hands raised along with the newly-turned Cena.

To the fans hoping and expecting this to happen, who will Cena turn against? Turning against Edge or Chris Jericho seems counter productive as they are already heels. Perhaps the WWE is expecting to turn one or both of them face to have some fodder for Cena to face, but I highly doubt it. Edge spent 4 months as a face early in 2010, and it seemed the 'E lost faith in his abilities, as he turned heel immediately once drafted to Raw from Smackdown. Jericho is always possible, but would anyone's face turn be needed or warranted? Randy Orton is heavily becoming the next face star on Raw, why would they want to tarnish his reactions by turning another long standing heel? It's not going to happen.

This leaves John Morrison, R-Truth, and Great Khali on the main roster. While pushing someone fresh to the main event sounds like a perfect scenario, it's completely illogical. Khali is in no way the man to face off against Cena the villain. He can't command the attention of the entire WWE Universe in a high profile match like the one proposed. Plus, he's not exactly fresh. John Cena will need some credibility to help push the new direction in his career, and would therefore need some victories. That would mean any chances of pushing Truth or Morrison up the ladder would be met with losses. They might not be career threatening in any way, they could always bounce back some other time. But the fans will want someone to stand up against Cena, and will want to back that person up 100%. A loss early like this would hinder those chances.

That would leave Bret Hart from the team of 7. The perfect world ideology would be to have the Hitman bring in enforcers to take out Cena immediately following SummerSlam, since obviously Hart could not jump in the ring himself. So would we see the next PPVs headlined by John Cena vs the Hart Dynasty? I am a huge Tyson Kidd fan, but in no way is that a marquee match up. Without looking outside of Raw, the Hitman would have only Randy Orton or HHH to choose from. How lucky would we be, as fans, to witness another Cena vs HHH or Orton feud? Of course, the hero and villain roles would be reversed, but how could anyone honestly expect that to be fresh enough?

    The logic just isn't there.

    Nexus
Throughout all this talk, the mention of Nexus has been relatively insignificant and nominal.

    Precisely.

Next to the massive storyline of a heel John Cena, the Nexus would take a major backseat. Raw already has Sheamus holding the WWE Championship. Add a dynamo heel Cena, and Nexus suddenly seems inconsequential. The weaknesses of the individual members are well hidden at the moment, but without the top talent in the ring against them, their green will be on full display. This isn't a knock on anyone in particular, but in Paul Heyman-esque booking, the Nexus have used the little ability they have to make a ginormous mark on Raw. Already, the shine was losing the luster last week during the initial 7 vs 7 Elimination Match on Raw.

Cena would become the focus of Nexus, and would therefore erase all the momentum Wade Barrett and the other NXT Season 1 rookies have made. Relegated to 3rd string heels, anything the Nexus would do would pale in comparison to their debut pummelings. The targets so far have been nothing but the most dominant of names, John Cena in particular. If he were to side with Nexus, who would be left for the Magnificent Seven to take aim at? Orton perhaps. HHH is another possibility. But they'd most likely be busy with Cena himself. That would leave very little competition outside of dropping down to the midcard.

Now, I'm not trying to say the Nexus should be main event for life. With the exception of Wade Barrett, I don't think anyone in the current Nexus will ever be main event material no matter how much time they get to develop. But for Nexus to succeed as a whole, their dominion should extend a bit further than 2 months. Obviously for Barrett to succeed at the top of the echelon, he should stand out above his peers. Would a stable lead by John Cena give Barrett that sort of space? He would no doubt go from leader to second in command. And if neither of them are after the WWE Championship, Barrett would be even further down the ladder.

    Raw Is Lame
In general, the Raw brand is stale and malodorous. This is a oft-mentioned defense for those who argue for John Cena to become villainous. To that I say: a single turn will not alter the general anaemic nature of Monday Nights. He'd still need a surrounding cast to work with. Further examination shows how ineffectual Cena would work as heel.

It took the injection of Sheamus to make the main event scene anything resembling novel. Think about that: a rookie with only months of main roster experience was suddenly propelled into a WWE Championship match in order to give Raw originality. What happened to the slow push? Ever since the instant success of Brock Lesnar and others, the WWE seems to be short sighted when looking for the next breakout star. If someone doesn't connect immediately with the core audience, then they are seemingly forgotten until it best suits Vince and co. In the meantime, Raw continues with the same cast of characters as the year before. And the year before that.

    And before that.

Now, this wouldn't be so detrimental if the characters evolved in some way, but most of them don't. Because of this, no matter what alignment John Cena is portrayed as, he's not wrestling anyone new. The only new opponent for Cena on Raw is Wade Barrett. Why the fuck would you instead have him turn heel and side with him? Heel Cena ends up going against HHH and Orton. Said it before, I'll say it again: fuck that.

If you want to elevate talent to take on a heel Cena, I dare you to find them. The best rising stars on the Red brand are already booed. Mr Money in the Bank, The Miz is easily the top prospect to main event in the near future. Ted DiBiase has long been discussed as the next midcarder to move up (though I fail to see anything special in him whatsoever). Add The Nexus, William Regal, Zack Ryder, and big Ezekiel Jackson to the list. All of them make better opponents for Cena.

Now, before you counter with Evan Bourne, R-Truth or John Morrison, let me remind you how inefficient they would be against a dastardly Cena. WWE booking is predictable in that they don't usually let someone lose the big matches when their characters are most vulnerable, like during a swing towards technico or rudo for example. As for the wrestler themselves:

    Bourne
Useless on the microphone, and still could use a United States title run before really testing the waters above. He could win a fluke victory or two, but he's in no position to come out on top of Cena clean without John getting his heat back somehow. Would make for a decent TV rivalry, but this could never main event a PPV.

    Morrison
Also useless with the stick, and is rumored to turn heel soon as well. Should he stay face, I expect him to main event in the near future, but his rise needs to be solid. Another tease towards the glass ceiling, only to fail again, would be a major detriment to his career. He'd need the victory at this point, and he wouldn't see it against Cena.

    R-Truth
The one wrestler who could easily survive a squash feud with Cena is the least likely to get it. I'm a fan of Truth, and I expect big things from him. But he's the essential midcard wrestler. He's a bit too goofy to take seriously. He could get the fluke win on Cena, but fail ultimately and it wouldn't really hurt him a bit. The downside of it is that Truth should be taken seriously if facing off against the poster boy of the WWE of 5 years. He should go through some character development first. I don't mind the rapping and general crowd interaction. But it's not main event qualities in the WWE.

    Babyface for life?
Now is NOT the time to turn Cena heel. If you really want Cena to have an innovative character, switch him to Smackdown, even if it's only for the 2 months between the Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania. Cena winning the Rumble match, only to challenge whoever is World Champion on the Blue Brand would shake up the entire company. My guess is that Cena stays on Raw because as the leader of the company, he should be on the lead show. Well, the lead show fucking sucks. Raw is a shithole of a wrestling show. Putting Cena against anybody on the Smackdown roster would be much more engaging than on Raw. Undertaker, Swagger, Rey Mysterio, CM Punk, Kane, and even the Big Show are all relatively more engrossing as new opponents for The Champ than anyone on Monday Nights.

Cena needs something new and exciting. No one can argue that. Yet, everyone is forgetting that at the moment he has it: he is trying to join forces with heels and faces as a combined force to take on the Nexus. But for some reason, the internet wrestling community is at a call to arms to have this unique angle come to an abrupt and terrible end, just because they are tired of face Cena. It is completely illogical and absurd to demand such a drastic measure at such an inopportune time. Heel Cena is not a bad thing, but the timing is wrong.

Besides, face John Cena still has one last person to turn to against the Nexus... and you have until the count of 5 to guess who that person is.

Hmmm......yeah. This goes back to Morpheus' feedback in Stinger's column. This is NOT what I expected the topic to be. This is just a regular old column for columns sake... sure "what if they turned Cena heel" - which has been done to death all over this and every other wrestling site. Shit, Hustle's been talking about it for weeks. Yeah, it's a "what if" - and again - different people, different interpretation.

But... even if we say "ok, we interpreted it differently" - this topic is still the "topic du jour" and has seen more coverage than Great Khali's crotch area. You can go on almost any IWC site out there and find something similar. I expect you to be more creative than that...

Well written? Check. Just not very creative - when to me - this topic was all about "how creative can you get?"

I see your point Zuma, but I felt that if the goal is to be a main page columnist, we need to be comfortable writing about current events more than history. Topical columns are just as important, and was a subject I've yet to cover in any round. I wanted to show that as a main page, I'll be able to show range in today's wrestling world as well as use my terrific knowledge of wrestling history.

This may have been done to death (I don't read any other columns), but the consensus is still "Do it." I took the other side of the argument which as far as I've seen has not been covered at all.

I counted to five...who is Cena going to turn to?

Your style is to generate discussion. I would say you accomplished that, for I am about to discuss...

Cena turning heel may not be the right move for all the reasons you described, but it's also THE RIGHT move because of other reasons you described. Raw is boring as shit and has been forever. Turn Cena heel, make Barrett his equal, and worry about all the details later. Better to bring guys from SD to HIM rather than keep him the same old stale babyface character that hasn't changed anything but his t-shirts in the last 5 years...

I can't really argue with anything you said even if I'm a promoter of the knee jerk reaction heel turn. While the long term could be shaky I wouldn't doubt at all that we are getting a face Orton versus a heel Cena to "change the dynamic" and I could even see a jeolous Barrett ultimately feuding with Cena. The rest as you said are simply role players anyway you look at it whose claim to fame will be a string of attacks on Raw stars regardless of who their leader is.

I pose this question to you though:

You want to know who Cena could turn against? The same person you view as the savior of this angle. Imagine that by hook or by crook Cena is down a team member going into SummerSlam only to show up at the event with none other than Daniel Bryan as his 7th. Eventually it all boils down to Cena turning on Bryan and "spitting" on him before the event ends with Cena celebrating as the event goes off the air. Not only do you elevate Bryan, you turn Cena, but you also continue the ruse of "was it all a work" much like the Hardy/Lita angle.

    I know, no way it'll happen but I can dream can't I.

    Really solid read yet again.

Pen15 was struggling with writing about past topics... I was somewhat suggesting that he attempt "What if Angle didn't go to TNA in 2006", but he wasn't feeling it, so thus writing about a current event and using "What if" to be reflective of the future.

I can see where the "done to death" scenario would come up, but it fits the theme of the week and is well written. I see the repetitive part that many have written about, but I think Pen's part about the heel turn being a big mistake is quite strong.

I see your points, but fixing Raw in such a short sighted and ignorant way won't help in the long run. This is a modern equivalent to Goldberg facing Hogan on Nitro out of nowhere. It's a rush job to salvage something that is in no need to be salvaged. Cena has been the only strong point in the Raw scene for years. Orton is developing nicely, but that just leads to Orton vs Cena part 62 if Cena turns heel. Yes, Cena needs something, but a heel turn isn't it. It's a knee jerk reaction without actually solving anything. Fix the rest of the brand before ruining the one thing that's been working correctly.

    MONKEY
Daniel Bryan would be perfect in the scenario you posed. But at the same time, we'd be faced with the same problems. Bryan is the type of wrestler who would benefit from a slow push, not a hot shot move towards the main event. Also, I didn't want to create alternate WWE universes where Bryan is back already. Leaving the audience with a tease seemed more realistic than saying "bring back this guy, and those 2, move this dude from Smackdown and put this other character over there...etc"

First, let me say this was a very good column. Sure, its a subject that's been "done to death", but why should you suffer for that if your quality is high?

Here's my problem with this competition as a whole:
The goal should be to write the best column, not to write a "main page worthy column" nor worry about what you'd be writing on the main page. The winner of this contest gets the next open MP slot, but what happens if that doesn't open up for several months? Will you stop writing columns until it opens up? The long term goal of this competition is to find a MP writer, but in the short term it should be to push people to become better, more creative writers. This column was really good; it could be on the MP today and I wouldn't bat an eye, but I think judging it based off of "is this column worthy of being on the MP" is incorrect and it should be judged based off of "is this a well written, creative column". Main page worthy =/= best. Main page worthy =/= good.

Again, really good column. If you can't form some opinion on something like this you probably don't deserve to be on the MP anyway. Its just an issue I've been having, when going through columns and feedback, with the competition in general.

Technically speaking I think there are either 1 or 2 holes on the MP right now. I know my spot is open, but I also think BCR's old spot is still unfilled unless I missed something.

It doesn't matter, because I feel I wrote the best column for this subject while also attempting to prove my main page worth. That's my personal opinion, but I know damn well that it's not up to me to decide. My style is consistent intelligent discussion starting. That's what I go for. It might not be what the next guy wants. Zuma wanted creative, he went into this round expecting it. On that note, I didn't deliver, nor did I try to. I'm more analytical than creative in terms of wrestling journalism. It's odd, as in every other aspect of my life, I'm creative (music, song writing, stand up comedy, radio hosting...etc). But I guess I take wrestling more serious than I do my other interests.

The fact that several people have discussed my subjects continuously throughout every round is a success in my book. I'm glad people like it, but I find a column should leave you thinking about the subject, not the format. I think that gets lost easily in this contest. Everyone is so overly critical of things that won't matter to most readers, and forget that columns, main page or in CF, are meant to get people to read and post. The more clicking, the more income for Calvin.

Well-written, regardless of personal opinions on the matter or whether or not the topic is overdone. I enjoyed it. I think a better route would be to have John Cena be hit by a bus in the parking lot, as that takes care of all issues, but that may be just me.

You do have a knack for starting discussion, which is definitely good. Ultimately, however, while a Main Page spot is higher profile, a CF column is better at promoting and allowing for public discussion where multiple people can chime in. Main Page columns generate mostly email feedback, which is good for one-on-ones, but you seem to like the public discussion aspect more. Keep that in mind.

Anyway, back to the feedback. I have no issues with this column not going an overly creative route. In fact, I think not doing so may help you stand out this round, and may help you counteract a little of the Cena Overload mentioned by some other people. I may have been a bit harsh by suggesting a horrible bus accident, but I do truly feel that the best alternative is not to turn him heel or keep him face, but rather to remove him from the equation for an extended period to freshen him up. That may in part be caused by my intense ambivalence with regard to him, but his reactions, as you mentioned, signify something needs to change somehow. I would rather see a Jericho or an Edge side with Nexus to put Cena out of action for an indeterminate period of time.

    Word life.

After your feedback Morph, I just thought of a much better What If column idea:
What if Vince incorporated seasons for each wrestler? Meaning Cena gets OCtober and November off, while HHH can have June and July off every year. It would be far fetched and a creative disaster, but it would give the characters a chance to breathe, and evolve on their own time.

As for email feedback over discussion, getting people to think is the key here. It won't matter if readers send emails instead of clicking to post a reply. The point is that my writing is instigating a reaction that can only help the site I'm writing for, while also displaying my passion for one of my most pleasurable hobbies.

It's an interesting idea for sure, and you're right about it wreaking creative havoc. The idea of seasons was discussed heavily, as I recall, around Benoit's death, and also I believe around Eddie's. Overall, it would certainly help the wrestlers, but I can see where it would be a burden to the promotion.

But would it also be a benefit? I could see where the freshening period would allow for excitement to build, possibly enhanced merchandise sales as the return anticipation climbs. I guess both sides have their pluses and minuses.

I've always felt that a system must be put in place. I think the overall best way to do it is to avoid a scheduled leave. Injuries could always intercede, angles can change. Guys should just get time off once in a while to re-energize themselves. Cena could have used this several times over, but I can see why Vince would be hesitant to leave his main man take off for an extended period of time.

I think that's an excellent idea, Pen. I mentioned in my column that I thought a long-term ramification of the public and government recognizing just how dangerous the sport of pro-wrestling is could be mandatory time off for wrestlers.

To me, that's not something they need to wait on for government regulation...it's just the right (and smart) thing to do...

I think you and I had the same difficulty this week. We didnt want to go back in time and make it a fantasy booking/changing history column.

This column has done exactly what it set out to do, start a discussion. Groundbreaking ideas? I don't believe so but did you want it to be? I don't believe so. I'd read this on the MP. It's current, get syou thinking, and more importantl gets you excited for SS.

    That's ma boyo...

I want Cena heel to freshen him up a bit, but you painted a pretty convincing arguement as to why it is a bad idea right now, and I have to agree that it would be a bad move after thinking it through. Done to death? Sure it has but if I switch to Main Page perspective for a moment, this will work. We may read it a million times but as long as it is from different perspectives, that is fine. Fact is that it is a hot topic and that will suit the main page probably even moreso than the forumns in my opinion.

As for the column, you convinced me so that is a big plus. It was well written which is a given from you. I would say your structure was not quite as good as it has been thus far though. At times i had the impression that thoughts were just popping into your head and you were writing them. It was not to the point where it became hard to read but it stood out a couple of times. So strong column, maybe not quite as strong as you have been so far but not a long way off.

Exactly. I think we were the only ones saying it was a bad idea in the PPV forum. Most columns about this are talking about the "need" for him to heel.

...and in the end, just so you know... I won't necessarily hold that against you as far as judging this competition goes. You've stirred debate and added to the further discussion of "what should happen in WWE right now" which is money on the main page. I think Mr. Morpheus forgets that we now have Facebook comments on the Main Page which keep people coming back to the main page clicking and clicking and commenting. This was a well written column, just not what I expected.

As for the idea... I disagree. I see your side of it, but I also see the need for them to turn Cene heel, or do SOMETHING with his character. This might not be a "full turn" but they definitely have an opportunity to evolve his character, and they need to pounce on it because he is indeed becoming stale.

I think Cena should come out every week dressed as a different fairy tale character. One week he's the Big Bad Wolf, the next he's Rumpelstiltzskin and so on. I'd get a hell of a kick outta that.

My hatred for Cena has dwindled over the past few years, but I still don't like him one bit. Something has to be done with his character. I don't know what that might be and quite frankly don't give a shit. He's been the same thing for five or six years now and it's just gotten... old.

    Another solid column.

Cena Miss Muffet. Make it happen.

While I really want Cena to turn heel in the near future, I agree that it shouldn't be by joining with Nexus, because, like you said, that's inevitably going to just put the focus on Cena instead of the group as a whole, which would be a waste of the only long-term wrestling angle that I've actually been excited about in years. I like Cena, but Nexus is far more interesting wreaking havoc on the Raw roster without the "leadership" of a veteran of the company, because said veteran (whether it's Cena or Chris Jericho or anyone else) would use them to further his won goals like almost every other stable in the history ever and thus make Nexus much less interesting.

Putting aside my all the things I agree with and/or disagree with that you wrote, the column was all well-written, and the topic, while a bit overdone, was interesting, and you managed to present in a way that I don't recall anyone else doing, while keeping it from becoming just another "Cena must/must not turn heel at SummerSlam" column, partly by taking a fresh approach to it, and partly through sheer writing ability. Also, it obviously did generate a good, thought-provoking discussion, which is usually a decent measure of a column's worth.

    A meritorious job, sir.

The fact that so many are talking a Cena heel turn is the exact reason that this is not a good time to turn him. I think there have been opportune times in the past, but they were missed. Whether that is for the best or not, I don't know. When it happens, it needs to feel organic yet be ahead of the buzz, if that is possible.

I always preferred Cena on Smackdown. I was hoping he was going back the year that HHH went. One would think Orton and HHH, if he returns, would be enough to keep RAW. Let Cena go, at least for a year trial run.

Hmm... I think the fair way of putting it would be very good rather than great. Your points are very strong, and you have a tone of authority that means even when I don't agree with you, your opinion still carries a certain weight, but the criticism raised by Zuma is probably valid.

I think they may use all of this as a smokescreen to mask a turn for someone else.

I think that someone may be Morrison. He's young enough to be seen as of the same "generation" as the NXT guys, and if he joins,he won't take the spotlight away from Barrett. God knows they'll insist on Barrett doing the talking.

In another note, thank you, Pen. Thank you for shining a light on Ted Jr's mediocrity. The kid's got a gimmick that should be a sure thing, and he's still struggling to get over. It's kind of a shame, really.

The only criticism I've got is that it seems as though you're asking "what if something didn't happen" which, in fact, hasn't happened yet. So the question's answered before you've written a word.

What you wrote, however, is undeniably interesting and has quite clearly grabbed a lot of our attention. That speaks for itself.

Nah, Z, I didn't forget that. The only thing is that feature is limited to the people who:
    1. Have Facebook (a fairly large contingent, it's true).
    2. Are willing to allow their Facebook info to be merged with the LOP system (much smaller percentage).

Besides, I have no doubts that discussion would happen either way were Pen to get the brass ring in this competition. He'd make it happen.

    Pen,

You came into this round as my number one ranked rookie. You've put out some fantastic stuff and when I began reading this, I thought "what the hell is this?". But as I read on, I began to just follow along. I get your point that a main page columnist should be able to talk about current events and you really did switch the topic around (which I really really liked btw) but Zuma made an excellent point with "Just not very creative - when to me - this topic was all about "how creative can you get?"" I'm sure you'll be around next round and I look forward to your next offering.

What I liked about this column is that you did, in fact, go in the opposite direction as most people. Obviously, the Cena "haters" want something.. anything.. to happen to his character that would present something of a change, but now, even his fans (myself included) are eagerly anticipating a heel turn for him. Sure, the topic of a turn for him has been done on numerous occasions, but by going in the other direction, you put the needed fresh twist on it.

I like the way your columns look, as far as simplicity and not overdoing the colored text. Just the slight use of colors, and the way your titles are aligned, etc. It looks very clean and makes things easy to read, perhaps more than anyone else in the entire competition.

All in all, yet another solid effort from you. It's starting to get old. Write something shitty, will ya? You know, just to mix it up.

    Good luck.

Excellent work here Pen. I want to see Cena turn heel but not at Summerslam to join the Nexus. If he did turn heel then it would be one of the biggest boneheaded moves the WWE has done in ages. Cena has genuine hate from the male audience. Turn him heel because he's tired of all the men hating on him.

As much as I hate Cena they are screwed if he goes heel because they have no new fresh faces to pick up the slack.
