You can't go wrong with either Samsung or Sony. I have Samsung LED and a Sony XBR and both have been great. For price and quality, you can't go wrong with the XBR. It has a great picture and is reasonably priced.
I tried posting this thread yesterday. It was quite long, mostly just rambling, then I went to post it and my computer inexpicably restarted itself. So short version...
I'm in the market for a new TV. Price isn't really an issue, i'm just looking for the best picture. I'm scared of burn-in with Plasmas, so want an LCD. I've mostly just looked at the Samsung range, but am open to Sony. I'll reiterate that picture quality is the most important thing to me. Anyone with a bit of expertise in the technology, I welcome your 2 cents.
How do the now discontinued Series 9 Samsungs compare to later models or any models of other brands? There seems to be one Australian online distributor with some in stock (Model LA46A950 to be specific). I just can't shake the local-dimming LED backlighting from my mind, even though i've never seen it in action with my own eyes.
I was even ready to submit myself to the C8000 Samsung, but a review at hdtvtest.co.uk turned me off it a bit. Basically the need of a yet to be released firmware update to fix some HD picture issues. I'm sure I can be talked back into it with the right words.
Cheers.

My opinion, get the Sony XBR.
Which models exactly do you guys own? Fuck I hate this, they must flood the market with all these acronyms on purpose.
Thing is, I got mate who until quite recently was a Sony rep. He says he's still got good mates at Sony and can likely get me cost price. But i'll pay for the better picture if it's a Samsung. Also, if they are not a current range model, I don't know if that avenue is of any use anyway. I'll try talking to him again tomorrow.
So I went to a few places this arvo to see the screens for myself. They were playing 3D material on the new Samsungs, which looked pretty cool. It felt a bit weird though, like it was a video game (they were playing a rugby league game that was broadcast in 3D recently). It wasn't glitchy or anything like that, the picture clarity and 3D solidity was actually quite impressive, better than some visual issues I noticed in Avatar at the cinema. I dunno, I suppose just because it was different to what i'm used to. Very hologrammy, which is definitely a word. Had some animated movie playing on blu-ray on one of the C7000s, and the picture was (to my eye) immaculate. Maybe i'll just go with the C8000, I don't think my eye can discern any reported issue.
Still would like to know the specific models you guys own, but i'll talk to my mate tomorrow and probably buy in the next couple of days. Cheers.
I also need some advice.
I am looking for a PAL region flat monitor with an 11" display and a resolution of either 320x240 or 640x480. It should accept A/V input or RCA input (as seen here: http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4905/outininin.jpg) (preferably A/V). Its purpose will be to be incorporated into my custom Portable Sega Mega Drive 2 in a similar fashion to which some monitors are a part of laptops. The monitor should be light-weight (preferably below 2 kg). I have no preference yet on the display technology provided the power usage is as small as can be. The monitor should be durable. I would prefer that the monitor is cheap, especially given its meagre specification, but this is negotiable.
Where can I buy such a monitor? Would I have to get it custom made? Where can I get that?
BBBBBBBRRRRRRRRR!!!
Honestly, right now, I don't think it's worth it to get the high-end crazy resolution tvs/monitors. Someone on here is probably a lot more knowledgeable then I am, but as far as I know the technology of the tvs is ahead of most of the input devices. For example, most 360 games only run at 720p. I don't know about HDtv because I only watch a few shows. Like I said though, someone surely knows more than I. Rogue I think is one of the tv techies around here.
Thanks for your input, but blu-ray movies are 1080p, so I want the best LCD picture I can get. I don't play games apart from poker on my DS to help me doze off to sleep.
I did a bit of looking under the XBR series and the HX900 is really the only one I would go for, as it will have local dimming, full array LED backlighting and 240mhz motion something or rather, which will make it better than any of the Samsungs. But that's not out yet, and talking to my mate, he seemed to think July, and even then, stock might not be so easy to come by being so new and the first of Sony's 3D TVs. He can't get me older models like the 2008 XBR I might've considered.
So, I figure i'm left with two choices. Get a C8000 Samsung or wait at least a month (possibily an indefinite wait) for an HX900 Sony. The HX900 is so far unreviewed, so i've really only got common specs to go off. I'm leaning towards the Samsung cus it'll definitely be delivered in time for the last 3D footy game of the series
Bloody Sony. They're a sponsor of the World Cup, are they not? Why are they waiting so close to the start of the tournament before releasing their 3D TVs, if they're released before the tournament at all? Pretty annoying. Samsung has got the timing right.
They have Wal-mart down there in Australia right? Avoid buying a TV from there. It might look the same, but they're not the same models you'd buy in a dedicated electronics type of a store. They're almost always lower quality and absolute garbage in terms of reliability.
I wouldn't count on this 3DTV to take off, it's a gimmick that needs to just go away.
No Walmart here, did Neighbours trick you into thinking that?
Doesn't look like 3D is going to go anywhere. It's very gimmicky at the moment, but I can only see it becoming more and more widespread. Sorry.
^LOL... are you being sarcastic? Holograms will be where we go. Get on the bus. (or PODJ)
Go to store that specializes in televisions, and have them put the same program on the screens then judge or yourself. When I bought my set, I was at Costco and they always work it that way. All the screens are playing the same thing, and they sort them by size. I went to the size I wanted, and compared the picture (I also took price into account because I'm not a baller like EJ) and chose what I liked. Make them do the same or you. When you get into the higher end products I don't think your eye is going to discern too much of a difference between the different screens.
Just as an FYI... my hotel uses LG screens only, and looking at the large sample size of 600 tv's being used almost daily in abusive ways by hotel guests, they're only 3 years old and we're starting to see some failure in some sets. I don't recommend LGs for that reason...
Pitchers and Catchers make winning easier.
Now I don't know if YOU'RE being sarcastic about holograms. I don't believe Minority Report was a work of non-fiction, but perhaps it was.
While I am satisfactorily cashed up at the moment, it's temporary until I own my own place, which should be within the next 6 months, then i'll be back to eating cockroaches and catching bath water from the gutter. I've worked hard, made sacrifices and lived simply. I'm not gonna cheap out on a passion of mine, that being film watching.
Can anyone help with my project? I have been googling for the last 2 days and have had no luck.
BBBBBBBRRRRRRRRR!!!
http://slickdeals.net/
Some of the most amazing deals you'll ever find in that link, especially on flat screen TV's and cpu's.
There are some good deals there indeed. Only problem is i'm on the other side of the world where none of them will deliver to. I'm pretty much decided on the 55" C8000 now, and it's not in any of those deals I could find through searching anyway. I'm working on a good deal with someone here at the moment. Just waiting on confirmation of available stock, of which I will be informed about on Monday. Will have to get it delivered from Melbourne.
Marvin, I just had a bit of a look. You've got very specific requirements, I can see why it's been a problem. I will have a better look on Monday or Tuesday if you haven't found anything by then.
What about this, Mr. Nash?
http://wintal.com.au/tv_lcd_plasma/43098905.html
Well, for a start, I specified 11", that is 10.4". Also, that has no capacity for being powered by battery, which is useless in a prototype portable gaming system. Am I expected to carry my own generator on my back?
BBBBBBBRRRRRRRRR!!!
So ends my search.
Did I just see Zuma bragging about a flat screen he bought from Costco?
is that the 32 inch mini screen you bragged about finding a "SUPER DEAL" on two years ago?
i got a 47" JVC LCD in January and it hasn't missed a beat, that's for the lounge room where it's great for DVDs and the gfs wii console. For my console gaming i have a 37" Toshiba, ideally within a year i will have a 40" Sony - top of the range model.
but your selection sounds good, can't have too big... that's what i like to say.
I ended up getting the C8000, it arrived today. I've been admiring it for the last 4 hours, I wasn't joking about watching a 48cm CRT before this. While I wait for a bluray player of my own (will get one for free from Samsung, but could be a month or more away), or until I drag a mate over with his PS3 or something, i've only been able to watch 720p HD TV. It looks good, but I can see graininess on a TV this large, so I can't wait to watch 1080p on it. Mate's got Avatar and Planet Earth, which are going to be my first two bluray purchases, so i'll get him to bring those around for a preview. One thing I can already comment on are the incredible blacks, the contrast is amazing. Looking like a worthy buy.
I'm having a shower and going back to the box of awesomeness.
my mate whom i've been asking to purchase a new TV for 3 years finally took the plunge the other week with you. he got a 42" bravia and it does seem sickness. i collect TVs these days, got 4 in every room.
