    Button Up: Resilience

    “I have a dream.”

“What happens to a dream deferred?”

Can the dreamer actualize his desires? Or are his dreams as the rain is to the farmer, out of his control? Was Shawn Michaels born for greatness? Could Marty never have succeeded, because he lacked charisma that cannot be taught? Does a learned charismatic exist?

Furthermore, what separates Glacier from the Rock? Built to blow the ceiling off the roof, Glacier dominated opponent after opponent. The snow did not stick, however. Nobody believed in Glacier. Are we worsened when we are doubted?

Poor Glacier. Poor Marty. Poor Matt Hardy. Such a pity party. Lucky Rocky, Lucky Shawn, Lucky Jeff.

What is the difference between the successful dreamer and the unsuccessful dreamer? There must be a meaning ascribed. After all there’s a meaning for everything. Even the cynic believes in meaning. He believes there is no meaning. “There is no meaning” is a meaning.

Countless meanings orbit us. They can fit in our grasps. We are larger than meanings. The darker orbits do not serve us; they master us. They blame fate, God, karma, and lions that cannot be tamed. How resourceful are they? The unproductive one clenches to and believes she is clenched by her chosen meaning, “I receive not because I cannot.” The meaning says she CANNOT, so she holds back! No longer does the dark meaning, much smaller than her, belong to her. She belongs to it.

On the other end of the spectrum, when an orbit’s brightness is turned to its highest intensity, the meaning blinds us. Still, the glow is irresistible. These orbits, these meanings, make us feel invincible. Some believe that the smallest success raises them to God-like status. The mind, without the influence of alcohol, can make one ten feet tall and bullet proof. The mind can do anything to build or destroy us.

Is there a stone for every Goliath? Does pride always come before the fall? Pride that is built on “greatness”, something subjective: is there really a root to hold this tree up?

For Shawn Michaels, throwing his partner through the barber-shop window did not mean he had to pick Marty up, kiss his boo-boos, and apologize to him. It meant sun glasses and hearts, arrogance and women, and a chance to showcase his talent as a solo act. Like Bret Hart, HBK being dwarfed in size by the heroes of the WWE’s past meant he had to standout and be the best wrestler on the roster. HBK’s first world title meant the actualization of a boyhood dream.

While HBK lost some wars to drugs but prevailed in the end, Marty spent more time pinned by his habits than he did making a career for himself. What if Marty had pulled himself up from that scene, picked the glass out of his face, and gave being victimized by HBK a meaning that could lay the foundation for a skyscraper? What if Marty felt that being inferior to HBK in charisma meant he had to exceed HBK in ring presence and skill?

What if Matt Hardy finally decides being dependable isn’t good enough? Instead of crying about the fact, what if he chose to switch his strategy? What if every columnist in LOP could transform criticism into constant improvement? What if getting your heart-broken meant there’s something wrong with her, not you? What if there is something you should improve and the heartbreak meant you had to up your impression for the next lady in your life? What if losing a job meant a chance to pursue your real passion?

What is the difference between a Glacier and a Rock? These two men both started on a path to baby-face dominance. The footprints of Bruno, Hogan, Warrior, and Diesel promised the path would lead them to World Championships. Yet, this path lied. Glacier and Rocky reached dead ends. The difference is Rocky made a new way.

The fans chanted, “Die Rocky die.” However, this did not mean Dwayne Johnson had to die; this meant “The Rock” must be born.

Benny - This was good, but perhaps just a slight bit on the ambiguous side. Maybe by merit of trying to describe the indescribable X factor that completes a superstar.

You've always been very good at working with concepts that are very intangible, but I feel that just a little bit too much of this one was left out in the ether. Maybe a little bit too much spinning of the tires in rhetoric, and when you finally got traction with that awesome last sentence, it was over.

But it is damn good to see you back.

Damn straight, without death there can be no Rebirth. I remember seeing that somewhere...

I agree with BK's comments too. It's a tad ethereal, without enough grounding. It felt underdeveloped in the end because of that. What was here wasn't bad, but it wasn't complete to me either. I liked it overall though. See you in the future.

I love your flying visits. I feel there was an underlying message here. Maybe something to do with a sibling, maybe you feel overshadowed, or maybe you feel you are the Jeff Hardy. Personally I don't have a favourite Hardy.

    That's ma boyo...

I had my heart broken and decided recently it was her. Very liberating.

What if columnists could write columns as brief as they chose as long as they were potent enough to stand?

Never mind. You just did that.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and constructive criticism. Certainly, I aim to bring my subjects down to earth, and feedback that inspires me to do that is fantastic to me.

I wish badly that there was another one of me. While I chase so many things in life, this other me could sit at the PC all day watching wrestling on Youtube, learning the art of writing, reading and feed-backing, and writing columns. Who knows maybe he would be even more fulfilled than me.

Certainly I love my life, but at one time I poured my heart and soul into this and I did love that too in its own way.

Really good column. I dug the underlying message in this. I have always thought Matt was better than Jeff from the start. Oh and Marty Jannetty rules!!
