    2010 College Football Season Discussion

With the USA Today Preseason Top 25 being released today, I figured we can finally open the thread for the upcoming season.

    The poll:
    1 Alabama (55) 0-0 1469
    2 Ohio State (4) 0-0 1392
    3 Florida 0-0 1245
    4 Texas 0-0 1240
    5 Boise State 0-0 1215
    6 Virginia Tech 0-0 1052
    7 TCU 0-0 1051
    8 Oklahoma 0-0 1035
    9 Nebraska 0-0 1001
    10 Iowa 0-0 952
    11 Oregon 0-0 940
    12 Wisconsin 0-0 778
    13 Miami (FL) 0-0 728
    14 Penn State 0-0 508
    15 Pittsburgh 0-0 492
    16 LSU 0-0 476
    17 Georgia Tech 0-0 455
    18 North Carolina 0-0 445
    19 Arkansas 0-0 438
    20 Florida State 0-0 374
    21 Georgia 0-0 312
    22 Oregon State 0-0 263
    23 Auburn 0-0 260
    24 Utah 0-0 169
    24 West Virginia 0-0 169

Too lazy to take out records and points.

Boise State has zero excuses this year.

Only four Big Ten teams again? Meh.

Five ACC teams? Bet only two of them are in the top 25 when the season's over. And I bet neither of those two teams are the Canes. I hope I'm wrong, I hope they win the ACC this year as I think they can, but I'm not counting on it. Not with the way Jacory Harris played towards the end of last year.
    PIG-E. drainin' the three.

4 big ten teams in the top 14. Iowa underrated at #10. That's ok. And who's great idea was this black forum background? It's pretty annoying. I guess I am not use to it yet.

If Big Ten teams outside of Ohio State (and this year Penn State for the first time ever) actually scheduled good OOC games, you might see more in the Top 25. They're actually better this year, as opposed to say, 2008 where the best non-Ohio State OOC game was against Syracuse.

If Indiana actually scheduled hard games in their OOC schedule, we'd probably only win 1 game if we were lucky.

    WE SCHEDULED USC GODDAMMIT

We also had California on the schedule a few years back. Marshawn Lynch made us his bitch.

UCONN should be in the top 25. No matter, we'll be there after we beat Michigan in the Big House.

As I said, Big 10 is better this year. The past few years have been a complete joke.

I'm so paying inflated prices for a ticket to the USC game here. I wrote a graduate paper on corruption in college sports, and focused primarily on USC football. I want in.

  12. #12
You wrote a paper on corruption on sports and it dealt with USC football as opposed to Kentucky basketball? If I was the prof I would've dropped you a letter right there.

Interesting story coming from the football conference fallout. Apparently BYU has quietly been looking into the possibility of going independent in football, and competing in the WAC for other sports. If they can get a Notre Dame promise from the BCS (if they're in the top 8 of the BCS, they get an auto-bid), they're going to pull the trigger on it.

THAT... makes complete sense. BYU, Notre Dame, the armed forces teams (including Air Force) and SMU should be of no conference... for obvious reasons.

And now that BYU looks like it's definitely going independent, the Mountain West has offered invites to Fresno State and Nevada. This is fun again!

So, Fresno State/Nevada accept going to the MWC. That leaves, football-wise, the MWC with 6 teams:
    Idaho
    Louisiana Tech
    Hawaii
    Utah State
    San Jose State
    New Mexico State

BYU is there for every sport except football. Now, obviously, you can't have an FBS conference with 6 teams. That leads to one of two possibilities. The first is to raid the Sun Belt Conference. I would say CUSA, but right now CUSA > WAC. The most likely targets are North Texas, Louisiana Lafayette and Louisiana Monroe.

The other possibility is for the WAC to drop football. That would be ridiculous. It would also leave Hawaii in a really interesting position.

There's one other potential complicating factor. The Mountain West, in their conference call, was basically openly courting Houston. If Houston leaves, CUSA would look to grab a new team...likely Louisiana Tech. If that happens, the WAC would need all of the three previous teams to keep football, an unlikely proposition. Otherwise, they'd be basically forced to drop football. This would make Hawaii an independent.

I agree with you on the first part. Randy Edsell runs one hell of a program. He really kept that team together after the tragic/senseless death of Jasper Brown.

Can't agree on the second part. Being born and raised in Michigan, the Wolverines are my team for better or for worse. That being said, playing UCONN scares the crap out of me.

Fixed and thanks for the kind words about my team. I think it will be a close game honestly, Uconn got a good team coming back, with a decent shot to win the big east, but Rich Rod owned Uconn when he was at WVU and he really can't afford to lose the opener to a less talented program esp. at home.

If Uconn wins, it will be because they have more heart then most teams imo.

I like how Iowa schedules OOC games. They usually have 2 "warm up" games, rival game with Iowa St., and 1 tough game.

  24. #24
Eh....Arizona isn't exactly a tough game. Especially when you consider the fact that they were 5-7 when Iowa made the home and home.

  25. #25
Compared to the directional schools Iowa throws on there Arizona is plenty difficult.

UConn does have more heart than most teams.

And part of me really wants to see UConn. win and start the countdown to getting Rich Rod out of Ann Arbor (and get Jim Harbaugh back to his alma mater). Rich Rod has to win at least 7 or 8 games to keep his job.

And please don't hate me T.O. If born there, you either cheer for the Spartans or Wolverines; or one of the other schools (Central, Eastern, Western) if you or a relative went there.

Getting Harbaugh back may be easier said than done. Let's say Stanford kicks ass this year, I've got them winning the Pac Ten, they'll throw a lot at Harbaugh to keep him to stay. And if he gets Andrew Luck to return, that's more reason to stay at Stanford. He could build Stanford into a top 20 football program, and he'll be set at that job.

Rich Rod is trying to run an offense that can work, the problem is he doesn't have the speed he did at West Virginia. Come on, he was able to have a 3 headed monster of Pat White, Steve Slaton, and Owen Schmitt, and for one season he had those 3 and Noel Devine. He hasn't been able to get anything near that at Michigan. Tate Forcier showed flashes last year, in particular in the Notre Dame game, but was way too inconsistent.

Which is why Denard Robinson beat out Forcier for the starting job this season!

And Stanford has as good a chance as anybody to win the Pac 10 this year. You can make a case for any of those 10 teams to win it; except for Washingston State because they are just God-awful!

  29. #29
or Washington. Their defense is still gonna suck.

I think its a make or break year for Rich rod but if they go like 7-5 but beat Ohio State then Rich rod will keep his job.

I hate that Uconn has to play Michigan and Notre Dame in the same season. I miss the days of our cream puff OOC schedule. We also scheduled Tennessee for 2015 I think.

Oh well, if we lose to Michigan we got Texas Southren the next week lol.

Edit: Just looked at the schedule again and Norte dame is not on it lol.

Maryland's doing a good job of getting at least one quality opponent OOC every year. Just came off a home and home with Cal, doing one with WVU this year and 2011. Notre Dame is playing Maryland in Fed Ex in 2012, and they're working out a home and home with Texas, though the exact years aren't certain yet, probably 14/15.

While we had a home and home (albeit stretched out over 3 or 4 years) with Cal as well, a home and home with USC coming up, and a SHOULD HAVE BEEN home and home with Texas that fell through because those asses wanted exclusive TV rights and revenues.

  32. #32
Just saw an article on CBS sports. com where the guy said Uconn would finish second to Pitt but what I found interesting was, he said Uconn has better talent then Michigan. Has Michigan fallen off that much or has Uconn got that much better? I think its a combo of both. He also called Randy Edsell the best coach in the big East which I agree with.

Another year which Miami starts off with a murderer's row type schedule. Week 1's a gimme but it's difficult to take the next step in terms of being back with a schedule that starts off so rough.

He could go 1-11 but if the one win would be OSU, they'd keep him. So sick of hearing all my Ohio friends (and I got a ton of them) rub it in my face that Michigan hadn't beaten OSU since 2003.

And yes Miami has a murderer's row schedule maybe the toughest in the country.

Yeah. lol. I think our top rusher is suspended which further hurts an already weakened offense. Coach Marrone may preach toughness but you still need talent. I pray for a surprise season but gotta be realistic. I hope one wr emerges and for Ryan Nassib to look like a quality BE qb.

Here is a great news story out of the Corvallis Oregon's Gazette Times:

An Oregon State University football player has been dismissed from the team following an arrest early Sunday morning.

Tyler Patrick Thomas, 19, of Kalispell, Mont., was arrested on charges of first-degree criminal trespass, second-degree criminal mischief and resisting arrest.

According to information from the Corvallis Police Department, at about 4:51 a.m., police were called to 519 N.W. 14th Street after a 32-year-old woman reported there was a naked man in the upstairs office of her residence.

When officers arrived, they ordered him to get on the ground several times, but he refused.

Then Thomas, who had reportedly been drinking, got into a "three-point stance" and lunged at the officers, who Tased him.

Thomas was booked into Benton County Jail but was released later the same day.

Thomas, an offensive lineman, redshirted the 2009 season for the Beavers.

So Forcier did lose the starting job? I don't follow Michigan but the last I heard was there was a competition. Forcier is talented as hell, but he's just too damn inconsistent.
