Hey all. I just got a Wii for my 32nd birthday. I picked up Mario Kart last Christmas for my 3 much younger siblings and was instantly in love with the game. Since then, I've been hankering to get a Wii but my old lady convinced me to hold off. The wait is over! So far I've got Mario Kart and I picked up Super Mario Galaxy 2 yesterday (as well as the two sports game collections that came with the Wii). I'm an old school Nintendo gamer/loyalist but when I picked up a new system in 2007 I went with the Xbox 360 as I felt it was a more "mature" system. After a few days playing the Wii and playing my brother and sisters over the last year and playing the demos at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Target I kind of wish I would have bought a Wii in 2007.
Long story short, I'm looking for suggestions as to what games I should look into getting for the system. I traditionally am a HUGE fan of the iconic Nintendo characters and games (ie Mario, Zelda/Link, Mega Man, CastleVania). I enjoy first/third person shooter type games (ie Halo, 007 Golden Eye, BioShock) and enjoy hockey, football, and baseball games. I've never been into role playing games (I most recently tried Mass Effect and Fable II and just couldn't get into either). And of course (being that this is a wrestling site) I dig a GOOD wrestling game, I consider WCW vs NWO Revenge to be the greatest wrestling game ever (I loved the simplicity of the controls) and I absolutely HATED WWF Raw from the same time period because the game controls were way too complex. I'm open to both platform/2D and 3D games. I'm open to more kid friendly/childish games as well as games targeted to a more mature audience, my main interest is in getting games that are fun to play and look and sound great.
Based on that... Any suggestions?

Any of the Tiger Woods games
Zelda: Twilight Princess
New Super Mario Bros.
Mario Super Star Baseball (probably the best baseball game ever made)
That's about it. I'd stick with the 360 for sports games, except drunken bowling. I haven't really used my Wii for quite some time, but now that Galaxy 2 is out, that will change.

I have a large collection of games for the Wii, but you have to realize most are going to be either kiddy, directed at kids or not big budget since kids won't buy 'em. Resident Evil 4 for the Wii is pretty much my idea of gaming perfection. Other than thatm I've got...
Cursed Mountain
Deadly Creatures
Dead Space Extraction
House of the Dead: Overkill
Klonoa
Twilight Princess
Little King's Story
Madworld
Metal Slug Anthology
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Muramasa: Demon Blade
No More Heroes 1 +2
Resident Evil 0, 1 and 4
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Super Mario Galaxy 1+2
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Some are remakes, but it keeps me busy.

Well, if you like the classic characters, the best thing about the Wii is the VC and the ability to download the old games from systems past so I recommend doing a lot of that.
Resident Evil 4 is a must have as the control scheme is perfect for the Wii.
And I can second just about everything on FoonZees's list (I've yet to play the Mario Baseball game.)

I am a N-Boy too, so my suggestions would be:
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (By far my fav game on wii)
Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 (By far the best game on wii)
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Get the trilogy if haven't played the previous 2)
Tiger Woods 10 (Best golf game, great controls)
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (a no-brainer)
These would be absolute must buys. There are few other really good games (MadWorld, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics...); however if you are looking for realistic sports games, then i would stick with the 360.

You should definitely check out Monster Hunter Trilogy. Addictive gameplay, good graphics (for a Wii game) and quite time-consuming. It takes a bit to get used to and understand, but when you do, 5-stars.

One more to add... I know you said you didn't care for RPGs but how do you feel about Puzzle games?
Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure is a severely underrated game almost in the vain of the old Point and Click adventures. I suggest you check this out if you can find it and like those types of games.

Lot of good suggestions so far.
For FPS games that I haven't seen mentioned yet:
Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 ($21 at Amazon, a great deal because it's a standard FPS and has the campaign playable as an on-rails arcade shooter.)
The Conduit
Red Steel 2
Already been suggested, but New Super Mario Brothers is fantastic. Super Paper Mario is great too.

I couldn't agree more. I think it's one of the most commonly overlooked games for the Wii, which is a damn shame.

Cabela Big Game Hunter is the closest and funnest replica of Duck Hunt
Super Mario Bros Wii is pretty dam fun, especially if you're a big fan of Mario Bros games.
Mario Tennis is fun and a workout.
Wii Fit Plus has some cool games disguised as workouts. I use the driving range daily.

If you don't have Call of Duty 4 for another system, it's good for the Wii, though not much of a family game. If your wife is looking for an inroads to gaming, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the best way to introduce her. Er, by old lady you mean wife, right? [Nervous laughter goes here].

Mario Kart. I only play it once every few months so maybe the novelty of steering the kart with the remote hasn't worn off of me, but I still get a kick out of it.
Dont get Twilight Princess unless you love frustration and repetition.
It doesnt get fun til the second half of the game.
Hack it, and then you won't ever have to worry about wasting money on a shitty game ever again.
Far as I know, they haven't fixed the "Twlight hack" yet.

I would think Punch Out for the Wii would be a logical choice if you like the iconic Nintendo characters, the fun ones are all there. I haven't played it a lot, but the controls seem fairly simple.

One thing you might look into, just for fun, is to see what flash-based games you can play on the Wii via internet. Not everything will work, but I found some of our favorites from Miniclip and Albino Blacksheep will.
There are a bunch of websites like WiiPlayable, WiiFlash, Wiicade, etc. that offer Wii compatible flash games. Many just copy the others... but one site actually had a Duck Hunt that allowed you to shoot that darn dog. Giggle at me will ya? Bam!
Has anyone else found many Wii flash games online? Have you found any good flash Mario games that will actually play on the Wii's version of Opera?
